it's funny how the Nobel foundation does its best to avoid the nationalistic thing, but everybody else loves it. Also, all the universities that the laureates ever attended will claim them :)
on a serious tone, it's great two women took it, since science has been criticized to be a male-dominated business (only 2% of Nobel laureates in science are women, excluding this year winners)

Shameful is what this is. American medical researchers reduced to funding their work with money got from the Nobel Foundation.

How did these three work together when they are all far apart at different universities? Teleconferencing? SKYPE and a web cam?

It doesn't necessarily mean they work together, their groups brought different contributions to the same topic. However, collaboration between two research groups does not mean that they work shoulder to shoulder in the lab, but they exchange results and ideas, and each brings his/her expertise to the project. Moreover, the professor itself usually doesn't do any experimental work, students and postdocs do the experiments and then discuss the results with the prof. Who can further discuss them with his collaborators.
