Violence in the south is usually blamed on Muslim insurgents

Southern Thailand used to belong to Norther Malaysia (a Muslim country) so please do not be surprised that the Thais living now in southern Thailand are not Bhuddists but Muslims and feel quite oppresed by the Bangkok government.

elbudamexicano: Just so you know, since you don't appear to, Malaysia has been regarded as a shining example of how different religions and ethnic groups can live in harmony, and is seen around the world as an example that other countries should learn from. True, there has been strife in the past, but it has been very limited and has usually been due to tension between ethnic Chinese and Malays. So don't blame this act by Muslim extremists on Malaysia.

Oh, and don't fall for the 'Muslim=terrorist' argument that the bush government tried to make everyday parlance and people like Helter_Skelter fell for; we all know how bush is regarded now, and ALMOST all know his regime's actions and beliefs were moronic at best.

Anyway, while I don't agree with the tone of the anti-Muslim crap above, and want to point out that a LOT of the violence in Thailand in the last couple of years has been anti-government (not religion), I will admit that Thailand is perhaps not the best tourist destination of late.

smithinjapan, just so you should look at the whole picture of this region, Malaysia may be this "shining example of religions living in harmony" but not INDONESIA which is just a stone throw away. How many Thais Muslims being maltreated by their Bhuddist government does it take to get others angry and ready for revenge?

smithinjapan, from what i know muslim in japan is not only living in southern thailand. a lot of muslim in bangkok and ayutaya and all over the central region. plush the upper part of southern thailand also full with muslim. "BUT" non of them doing what we see on the news!

    why?

why only muslim living in the most south of the country where they can easily access to the Malaysia tv newspaper and radio do the bombing?

because they enjoy freedom of religion the thai offer them? anyone can be muslim or get out of any religion with out being jail like what the Malaysian do.

haft of the northern part of malaysia was under thailand control for many hundred of year, way long before malaysia is malaysia. Hindu-Buddhist was there even long before muslim taken over the region, can that be an excuse for the minority Hindu and Buddhist in malaysia cause violence as the southern thai muslim always use?
