I do not understand this whole homecoming thing. If it did not occur, there would be a lot of people not dead or hurt.

So blame the victims instead of blaming the drunk driver? A lot fewer people would die if they didn't go to work, go to the store, ride bicycles, or drive cars.

These parades have been held around the country for decades, and it is very rare that anyone ever gets hurt. The road was closed for the parade, and a rather stupid person thought it would be a great idea to get blotto on a Saturday morning and then go for a drive. This was not the fault of the parade or the victims who were hurt or killed, all of this is entirely the fault of the drunk driver.

shonanbb: And yet you probably understand just fine how people have a yearly elementary school reunion party on top of their junior highschool, highschool, university or college reunions, PTA reunions, and reunions with old co-workers, and if those were not held you'd have far fewer people drinking and being hurt one way or another. This is not because of an annual event held in many countries across those countries the world over -- it's because of an irresponsible woman. How about saying you don't understand how someone can drink and then think it's okay to get behind the wheel?

RIP to the victims. A horrible tragedy.

The perpetrator was booked with DUI in lieu of any other charge but is still only suspected of being drunk, or on drugs. It will probably take several days or weeks to get additional information as to the cause of the accident and for toxicology test results to come back. She could have been suicidal as well for all we know. RIP to the dead (one apparently an Indian MBA student) :(

Well, that's sad.

@Shonanbb: reckless, drunk, or merely distracted divers have made headlines here in Japan for plowing into groups of elementary school kids on the way to school; you don't need a homecoming parade to cause these sorts of accidents, just one bad driver.

So cancel all public events in case a drunk driver should come along? I don't understand your logic.

Yes, a car can be a lethal weapon, but the car isn't the problem nor the cause(except in cases of mechanical failure) but rather the driver. Did the driver suffer a medical emergency before the accident? She could also have had an epileptic episode.

Same old same old. The driver that was DUI was like a lot of other people here that believe its fine to drive after drinking or w/e they were taking "as long as no one gets hurt"... and then "out of the blue" they hurt someone and then wonder, "why oh why did this happen to me!", and "I'm now at fault!"

They never listen until it happens or affects them.

I cannot say how much I'm looking forward to self-driving vehicles. These idiots won't have to get behind the wheel and their car can take them home.

Just my opinion but she didn't look drunk to the point of incapacitation at all in the mug shot.

She wasn't driving at the time of the mug shot.

That is true but normally driving under the influence charges are brought after failing field sobriety tests, blood alcohol is outside the legal limit or refusing to take a breathalyzer etc.. I'm just saying it sounds like in this case there is more to it

Her coworkers said that she had been sent home early because she looked like she was on drugs at the tim. She had worked the evening shift and then the morning shift the next day.
