“When you have not even established the age of this person, how can you go to court bringing the charges against the others, and say your investigations are complete,” Sharma said. “We all know how police investigations are carried out in India.”
So what? Who cares how old the little shit is? It has been established that these 6 were involved one way or the other. Trial date needs to be set and the guilty parties need to be dealt with accordingly.

I wondered when someone would bring up the "elephant in the room" but it has been reported that the defendants will be represented. The source that reported that bit of news was Aljazerra. Normally when things happen in India, somehow they would bring up the religion of the persons (i.e. a devout Hindu fanatic, etc), but in this case, there was no mention of such information. I am guessing that the guys probably belong to a religion that is not Hindu, and if it were to be brought up, that would just lead to more protests and violence.
Not trying to blame one particular religion or group of people. I am sure that there are some bad Hindus and others in India also. But it just seems odd, as if the authorities are trying to keep some facts as low key as possible.

Alphaape,
All six of the accused are Hindus. The thing you mention about religion being mentioned in any case in India is not true. It just happens in the case of communal violence or hate crime/speech cases. But that is irrelevant to this article.

Some of the accused have names like Singh, a very non Hindu name, but my guess the whole country has been outraged and everyone wants some heads to roll ASAP!

@ FullM3ta: It would be nice if I didn't have to bring up the religious issue, but in most cases when you have horrible crimes committed in certain parts of the world, it seems that one of the main reasons that people can be so cruel to another has to do with religion, or in places like India one's caste. That's just the plain truth. There are still some radical's even in the Sikh community who still hold grudges against Hindu's and Muslims for various reasons that may not be apparent to those on the outside. I dont blame the Indian government for probably trying to steer clear of making comments like the ones I have been making, since any specific call out of one sect would lead to mass protests and rioting doing nothing to help stop the real crime, the rampant use of rape on women of India by all castes/sects.

@Elbuda: Singh is a common surname of Sikhs. However, it's also a common Hindu surname in North India.

AlphaApe: Would you stop trying to bring religion into this when yourself said 'they probably belong to a religion that is not Hindu' but they ARE Hindu?
Anyway, if the sixth person is indeed under age and they fob the most serious elements off on the kid he still won't get more than three years in a correctional facility while the three in this case will get very minor charges, if any. It'll outrage the community, for sure, but we're talking about a system that still largely turns a blind eye on this kind of thing and this could be a way out for many people nervous about change, and for the criminals.
Needless to say, I hope that doesn't happen and instead hope they face the full brunt of public anger, minus any death penalty charges. They'll appeal it, but then I hope the higher courts do the same. Then let them go to prison and experience some of what they dished out to the poor young woman.

You seem to be a decent human being, hence your opposition to the death penalty. But then you come on here hoping that the perpetrators " experience some of what they dished out to the poor young woman."
Which makes you a bit sick.
So which is the real smith?
