47-million-year-old skeleton sheds light on evolution

NEW YORK —

Scientists in New York unveiled Tuesday the skeleton of what they said could be the common ancestor to humans, apes and other primates.

The tiny creature, officially known as Darwinius masillae, but dubbed Ida, lived 47 million years ago and is unusually well preserved, missing only part of a leg, or five percent of the skeleton.

The finding, described Tuesday in the PloS ONE scientific journal, was displayed at a press conference at New York’s Natural History Museum, and is due to be the subject of a documentary on the History Channel, BBC and other broadcasters.

Organizers said that scientists led by Norway’s fossil expert, professor Jorn Hurum, worked for two years on Ida, first discovered in 1983 by private collectors who failed to understand her importance—and split the bones into two lots.

The monkey-like creature was preserved through the ages in Germany’s Messel Pit, a crater rich in Eocene Epoch fossils.

Although bearing a long tail, she had several human characteristics, including an opposable thumb, short arms and legs, and forward facing eyes.

She also lacked two key elements of modern lemurs: a grooming claw and a row of lower teeth known as the toothcomb.

“This is the first link to all humans—truly a fossil that links world heritage,” Hurum said in a statement.

David Attenborough, the renowned British naturalist and broadcaster, said the “little creature is going to show us our connection with all the rest of the mammals.”

“The link they would have said until now is missing… it is no longer missing,” he said.

Ida gives a glimpse into a time when the world was just taking its present shape. Dinosaurs were extinct, the Himalayas were forming and a huge range of mammals thrived in vast jungles.

According to the international team, Ida had suffered a badly broken wrist and that this might have been her undoing. The theory is that while drinking from the Messel lake she was overcome by carbon dioxide fumes and fell in.

“Ida slipped into unconsciousness, was washed into the lake, and sunk to the bottom, where the unique conditions preserved her for 47 million years,” a statement said.

Her last meal shows she was a herbivore. Gut contents revealed remains of fruits, seeds and leaves.

“This fossil is so complete. Everything’s there. It’s unheard of in the primate record at all. You have to get to human burial to see something that’s this complete,” Hurum said.

The press conference was unusually strongly hyped for a scientific event and the announcement was tied into a media campaign including the release of the documentary.

We need a picture of this lady, how are the posters going to be able to tell if she is kawii or not?

It was put there by god to test your faith, & you & I just failed that test.

More proof of our past comes to light daily!

The monkey-like creature was preserved through the ages in Germany’s Messel Pit, a crater rich in Eocene Epoch fossils.

As we get closer and closer to shedding light on our past the religious groups try to change their way of thinking. They attempt to justify their beliefs by claiming that this is just god testing our (their) faith.

But they are not Job and this is not a test by their self claimed god.

This is further proof of who we are and where we came from. Yes yes you religious types will yell and scream that we are not related to apes in any way. But as the proof keeps stacking your beliefs fall by the way side.

Not long ago the religious far right claimed that the dinosaurs were fallen devils and demons. Or they claimed that they too were test by their god. But they changed their tune and now try to claim those same dinosaurs as their leviathan or behemoth.

This is just their way of keeping their brittle beliefs in tact.

In a few more years as more and more discoveries pop up and as they can no longer hide their eyes from the truth. They will try and justify their beliefs by some how claiming our ape ancestors as their own.

Too bad they just can not accept facts and truth but rather stand by their so called faith.

Too long have we (Man) been held down by those same misguided beliefs. So many time as we made great leaps the far right religious types tried to pull us down with their beliefs.

Is it not time to shed those chains that have held us from advancing? Is it not time to cast aside those religions that cause us to go into tents rather than homes? Is it not time to stop killing in the name of a god?

When will we stop these insane practices?

When we take those religions out of places of power and place them where they belong, in privacy.

Though I do agree with your ideas I can’t understand how you managed to write such soap box nonsense at half eight in the morning. And have you thought that Ida could well be a fallen angle? A bit small & ugly by all accounts, but then who are we to judge these things?

I’m still waiting to get hold of a picture of this little lady. I want her to be the vanguard of reason over religion & in that respect I hope she is the ugliest little monkey possible.

Video at the BBC shows the fossil (surprisingly small) and a computer reconstruction with narration by David Attenborough

Ida was apparently 1 metre long including her long tail, and was probably a creature of the night.

What a bunch of hype! This fossil skeleton is a common ancestor of both apes and humans, a branch that split off tens of millions of years ago. It ain't no "missing link" connecting apes with humans. We already knew that primates split off from monkeys eons ago. This is not news!

Den_Den: "What will the Christians say now?"

They'll simply say that it was created by god at the same time everything else was, and put in place as is.

grafton at 08:49 AM JST - 20th May And have you thought that Ida could well be a fallen angle?

That is a new one, have not heard that reasoning before. To answer your question, no.

To think that the skeleton was any sort of mythical creature is in itself silly and childish. How could anyone with any sense in their skull ever dream up that fantasy is beyond me.

Faith is an attempt to understand what is beyond your reasoning you place a myth behind it and whala all the mysteries are answered.

Faith is the same as being scared of the dark because there are big bad monsters in that darkness. Instead of going out and turning on that light, faith keeps you in fear of everything.

Faith is so much easier than searching for the truth now isn't?

Believe in what can be answered by reason, anything else is but a waste of time. Truth is truth and that is what is before you. Turn on the light and walk out of the darkness.....

That skeleton is our ancestors showing us the truth.

Moderator: Readers, please do not turn this discussion into a debate on religion. Focus your comments on what is in the story.

I saw the article in the news tonight. It was cool. I like seeing these creatures that are found millions of years ago. Tears that 7000 years ago earth was created thing. < :-)
