  Islam and democracy are incompatible, yes. Thailand`s governments is refusing to acknowledge that, at great cost to the whole country. Alas, Western governments are making the same mistake.

  Southern thai malay and malaysian malay are diferent also in many ways though there is similiarity in language.

  Malaysian malay do not speak thai language they are more into learning and speaking english as 2nd language.

  Thailand side does not use roman script in its papers but malaysian malay use roman letters after british colony rule made them change their script from arabic.

  You must also understand malaysia also fought against british western democracy colonial rulers to gain the self rule.

  The whole malay archipelago was once in past history under rule of indonesian rulers and princes.

  Thailand was never ruled by any western nation.

  The average income difference between poorer thai malay and malaysian malay is huge. Quality of life diference in thai malay also is lower than malaysian malay.

  While all types road infractures,jobs and other things are much better in malaysia. Same thing cannot be said for south thailand and its massive unemployment woes.

  This also can be said of indonesian malay who also have big differnce in incomes,with malaysian malay side far ahead in economic excelence and in incomes gained.

  The problems really can be reduced if more efforts are taken by leading business in south east asia to up investments and economic oppurtunities via help of malaysian malay language speakers.

  Religions, democratic elections,muslims and all other faiths are able to live together as seen in malaysia and indonesia.

  Practising democratic ways has been longer in south east asia than in middle east.

  Mistakes will always be made by those politicians who do not understand another race in culture/language.

  Western governments or other government must not think that it is very easy way to rule over another race with their own language,culture,,history and faith.

  This is tragic mistake being made by politicians globally in western governments or other governments,today and also in history.

  None of your list of facts explains the continuing terrorism by muslim activists in Southern Thailand, including the murder (often by beheading) of Buddhist priests, schoolteachers, and even construction workers (for the crime of behing Buddhist). Koran sura 9:5, however does. Read it.

  Zaphod- There are problems in the south thailand, the conditions socially and economically is not condusive enough to have peace.

  The leaders of the southern region are not doing enough.

  I have not visited this region since the woes started, they could easily get back their past peaceful days with more attention/care on the part of the administrations there.

  Even during peaceful times the people there had easy access to guns and it was called the cowboy country of thailand with much gun violence between people there.

  Many people have died both thai malays and buddhist thai people in south thailand.

  They have to come to ceasefire via talks and other peace promoting measures.

  Zaphod, all religious followers have flaws. The flaw is not with buddha or mohammed.

  Religious teachings in original unchanged way is mostly very nice,merciful and very spiritual.

  It is weakness of followers of the religion in mercies that is the flaw,surely they are not following the pious ways of buddha or mohammed in mercies and spirituality.

  I have many malay and thai friends, they all seem very friendly,helpful and merciful. None of them have advocated murder of thai people or malay people.

  There is no need to be over emotional over this takbai,south thailand incident caused woe.

  And the killers are muslim terrorist, acting on the Koranic commands to hate and kill the unbelievers wherever they them. Come one -- where does the idea come from to behead Buddhist priests.

  And this muslim insurgency in South Thailand is not different from muslim insurgencies everywhere in the world. It is ridiculous trying to blank out religion from the picture.

  southern Thailand is not the poorest region in Thailand. It is the northeast, and they are very very very poor! Business in the south grow up every year due to the rich of tourist spot. And most part of southern Thailand is not pack with muslim malay, those people is living in only 3 province share border with Malaysia.

  How much central government have to help the malay speaker in the deep south? Government build free school system for their kids to learn the language, so they can read write which will help them get a job wherever in Thailand if they wish. Central open a muslim system back for them so they can save money for their future. Thai goverment let them open Islamic school which using local thai malay as teachers, so they can keep their kid learning their own language and religion. And you know what? They burn down the school, kill teachers, bomb the Islamic back, keep M16 along with bombs in the Islamic school. what the freak?

  Democracy doesn’t go to deep south? 10 pluses Islamic from the deep south has been in thai government for a very very long time. one of the biggest and oldest political party up today in Thailand also came from the deep south. Bangkok people support that party too.

  Some said “Mistakes will always be made by those politicians who do not understand another race in culture/language.” Thai government even let those minority carry 2 nationals, 2 passports (thai/malaysia)! Yes I agree, the thai government is so stupid they don’t understand the other race because no any minority in Thailand can do that! The last PM is a Chinese, last last PM is also a haft Chinese. Many PM haft laos. Non of them ever let the minority in their group carry 2 nationals, 2 passports!

  Thailand is not Malaysia with the muslim government that kicked some of the Chinese out just because they won to election in a big number, so the Chinese have to form a country call Singapore, and Thailand is not country that blame the minority Chinese for the last economic crisis.

  but Thailand got more than 20 groups of minority in the northern region alone. We got a big number of Chinese around the country, lage number of muslim in the old capital and Bangkok. Loas and Cambodian minority with a total of almost 30%. Big group of japanese, india and westerner permanently living in bangkok puket changmai and another big city around the country.

  “Non of them ever make a trouble!” Only a group of muslim lest than 2% of the 65 million living close to Malaysia do. Why? Everyone in Thailand asking the same question!

Why doesn`t have anyone the not-so-far-fetched idea to read up on the Koran and the Haddiths? The jihad against the infidels is a religious duty.

  The intifada in Thailand is absolutely not unique.
