Those poor people can't catch a break, can they?

A country that was not at war and not involved in the midst of a revolution had 7000 peace keepers before the earthquake. That alone should warn us all to be careful how we judge what we think is or should be happening now.
A question for those that have military backgrounds, in a war situation can’t the military clear an emergency airstrip quite quickly? I’m not sure but wouldn’t the current situation justify such a thing? That is a honest question, not a dig at anybody.

They already have a working airport and are handling 180 flights a day now. A rough-cut airstrip would be limited to aircraft that can handle such conditions... C-130's and the like. Aircraft heading to that airstrip would still have to be handled by the ATCs at the main airport - increasing the air traffic congestion over the country. Add to that the need for roads and storage at the airstrip to take care of what the aircraft bring in. So yes, it COULD be done, but not really that quickly.
