They should only allow women over 50 in combat roles -- there is nothing more dangerous than a women having hot flashes with a gun in her hand...

    TheQuestion

I'm going to get flak for this but whatever.

I agree that many positions in the military can and should be reorganized to reflect a changing battlefield in which soldiers find themselves. In our current military conflicts, enemy units can attack anywhere and at any time. In effect, there is no front line. As such preventing women from entering into most combat positions makes no sense.

    However....

Should the US ever enter into a conflict against a foreign power able to adequately negate US air supremacy (not exceed, merely prevent the US from doing what it did in Iraq and Afghanistan, ie destroy most defenses before ground troops even landed) there would be front lines and a lot of fast moving parts. In the US the average man is 6 inches taller and 30lbs heavier than his female counterpart.

"Males typically have about 56% greater lung volume per body mass. They also have larger hearts, 10% higher red blood cell count, higher hemoglobin, hence greater oxygen-carrying capacity. They also have higher circulating clotting factors . These differences lead to faster healing of wounds and higher peripheral pain tolerance."

Glucksman, A. (1981) Sexual Dimorphism in Human and Mammalian Biology and Pathology (Academic Press, 1981), pp. 66-75

"Gross measures of body strength suggest a 40-50% difference in upper body strength between the sexes as a result of this difference, and a 20-30% difference in lower body strength."

Miller, AE; MacDougall, JD; Tarnopolsky, MA; Sale, DG (1993). "Gender differences in strength and muscle fiber characteristics". European journal of applied physiology and occupational physiology 66 (3): 254–62.

I hate having this discussion but men are, on average and barring exceptions to that average, better suited to fighting and killing other human beings. While it's true a bullet doesn't discriminate that's only one part of long term heavy fighting. 90% of it would be moving heavy equipment long distances and trying not to fall victim to minor, but crippling, injuries and fatigue that may not kill but will render a soldier effectively useless.

The psychological argument against integration is BS. When you're being shot at you probably don't care all that much what gender the person next to you is.

If the court rules that women can be in front line positions they need to do away with the separate physical requirements. As it stands the standards for women are considerably more lax than they are for men. To score a 100 in an army fitness test a man age 17-21 must perform 71 pushups, a woman must perform 42. Sit-up standards are the same. Men must run 2 miles in 13 minutes, women must run it in 15:36.

If they did away with the separate set of female standards it may be acceptable. It would alleviate most of the logistical concerns I have about front line integration.

Only problem, They are NOT asking for restrictions to be lifted on MOST combat position, They are demanding NO RESTRICTIONS... Period...

So for argument's sake, let's sey they lift all restrictions (personally I doubt this will ever happen) and 25 or 30 women try out to become Navy SEALs, and ALL of them Fail... So they file a lawsuit alleging Discrimination, not only that, but now we have Nancy Pelosi demanding that all the services lower their physical requirements, so that women can pass.

    Ridiculous...

While I'm sure that a number of women may prove qualified for such positions I believe that such lawsuits would indeed be the result.
