Dykes was known around the neighborhood as a menacing figure who neighbors said once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe, threatened to shoot children for setting foot on his property and patrolled his yard at night with a flashlight and a firearm.

In short, a poster child for the NRA.

This is exactly the kind of guy the NRA would have fits over, if the "gub'mint" tried to take away his guns.

When the driver tried to block his way, the gunman shot him several times and took the 5-year-old boy.

Oh, yeah. Jimmy-boy is a real brave man. Thank you, NRA.

    He’s against the government

There you have it, a one-man militia protectin' the country from guvmint tyranny. Of course this man has the right to use a gun to protect his gawd-gibbn rights.

Obviously the bus driver should have been armed, or had someone ridin' shotgun on the school bus. If all the kids on the bus had been properly armed, this would never have happened.

Then again, it would also likely never have happened if this madman's guns had all been confiscated the moment he showed signs of madness and violent tendencies (known around the neighborhood as a menacing figure? beating a dog to death with a pipe? threatening to shoot children on his property? setting up unofficial speed bumps? How many hints are necessary?) or never allowed to have dangerous weapons in the first place.

If he does in fact have a TV in there isn't this media attention at the local with all cops surrounding him something that might exacerbate the situation?

I mean if he is that paranoid about the government, having media attention of heavily armed/military looking law enforcement forces surrounding him that he can see on his TV wouldn't that be in a way confirming his paranoia and so as a result just harden his resolve? I'm assuming he doesn't have cable or satellite TV in there so I would think about doing a local over the air black out on his situation and then pull the police forces back.

Sounds to me like a failure of local law enforcement. If he previously beat a dog to death with a pipe, why wasn't he arrested then?

If he shot at his neighbors a month ago, or brandished previously, why wasn't he taken into custody for that?

Seems like there's more to the story than what's been reported so far.
