I really enjoy spending the 4th of July in a small town. Somehow it's reassuring to see people having a lot of fun without dropping a wad.

Although you infuriate the rest of us with your butchering of the **English **language, I would like to congratulate our American cousins on their Independence Day. Have a beer on me, but don't drink and drive (you might spill some).

Skip, Down here in Yokosuka, we had an Eagles tribute band, a Fleetwood Mac tribute band and a Madonna tribute lip syncher (who, for unintentional comedy purposes, was my favorite, by far), food booths and then a very good fireworks display. We watched the fireworks in a wide-open field and the kids ran around until they were plum-tuckered out.
It was a good day, that is for sure.

Wow, I thought the idea of celebrating July 4th was dead.
Taka, Yokota, Zama, and Atsugi seem to be the closest to me; of course there is the Sanno and that Stars and Stripes place. Noting going on there today?

Amazing.
BAGHDAD (AFP) - More than 1,200 US troops serving in Iraq signed up for extended service in the military to mark America’s national day on Friday.
At least 1,215 troops re-enlisted for periods ranging from two to six years at the ceremony held at the spacious Al-Faw palace of executed dictator Saddam Hussein near Baghdad airport.
General David Petraeus, the head of US-led coalition forces in Iraq, said he was “proud of their decision to re-enlist and help the people of Iraq win their most important battle ... freedom.”
The US military has regularly re-enlisted service members in Iraq but Friday’s swearing-in was one of the largest, the military said.

I'm heading to the New Sanno around 6 p.m. for dinner. Tonight it's "American Classic" buffet. Mighty fine eatin'.
After that, it's over to the Fairwinds for Red, White and Blue colored drinks.
Again, Happy Birthday, Americans. It is indeed a great day to celebrate our freedom.

Sailwind,
Great link. I myself always start my 4th of July off by listening to this song:

Freedom,
The ones that protect it and are in faraway lands need to remembered this day also.

A bit late, and I know I rarely see eye-to-eye with most of you on this thread, but Happy Fourth of July! Hope it was a good one, and by the sounds of it, it was. Now go spread that fervour and cheer through love and brotherhood....

I have to agree with Canadian columnist to the world, Mark Steyn.
America is the greatest nation on earth.
