I disagree with the use of the term "Family Planning" when including abortion. If people had done their planning, there wouldn't be an unwanted pregnancy. But, as I've said before, "Family Planning" often means "What should I do now that I've started one". Oh, I also disagree with this article calling "Joyce" shy. How could she be so if she was making children?

They can call it what they want if it avoids the butchering of women in backroom abortions. Personally I do not like the idea of abortions but since I am a believer in democracy and freedom I have to accept that people will make decisions I do not agree with. Ultimately, it is the woman's right to decide.

Oh, I also disagree with this article calling "Joyce" shy. How could she be so if she was making children?

Sensei258 What a sexist and immature thing to say. Would be referring to your mother when you say that?

In developing countries there are very few opportunities for women to support themselves, outside the sex industry, so single women are often assumed to be prostitutes. This means "Joyce" was economically dependent on a man, obligating her in the usual ways. She attempted to procure birth control but a supply shortage meant the dosage was too low to prevent conception.

Have you ever been to the Third World. The only people that work in the Third World are the women. They're in the sweatshops, lugging crap to the market, planting in the fields - all while their worthless men are hanging around and drinking or playing dominoes. That's what makes the West and East Asia so special - a superior male work ethic.

And so who builds the roads, bridges, dams, buildings, power stations ... ?

I can't believe it when we took controceptives and abortion funds away from people who need it more than we do. You got people who have no money and no way to get away from the day to day drills of suffering. Where men are taking what they want, when ever they want and little concern whether they have one child after another child. When these women are trying to keep from having one child after another and to keep from having children infected with AIDS like they are.

We say we want to stop AIDS, but we refuse to distribute condoms. That's hypocracy at its best. < :-)

Sensei258, Regarding your "shy" comment, the story does not give a lot of specifics. For all we know, the boyfriend may have forced himself on her. Bebert, You may not be trying, but...you're funny.

The U.S. ban was established by Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1984, ended by Democrat Bill Clinton in 1993 and reinstated by Republican George W Bush in 2001.

The first and the last blinded by their ignorance and arrogance, supported by an electorate with equal qualities convinced of the superior rule of their misguided faith. There you have it. Thank you Obama for doing the right thing.

I rather thought that Betzee had a point. You, on the other hand forgot to mention that while the men were loafing about, they were also deciding which of the women got to work and which did not. I think that included in Betzee's point was that many developing countries are pay-to-play.

    sensei258:

Get off your high horse. Women in places like the slums of Africa don't have easy access to condoms and rape may not be taken seriously. And they certainly don't have the means to provide for 10 kids. No matter where they are, in the west, or in Africa or Asia, no matter how much or little money they have, people will always have sex. Would you be willing to adopt a few kids yourself? I bet you feel quite comfortable there.

buddha4brains - sexist and immature? why? The article calls her a "shy 18 year old high school student", who just happened to be getting birth control. I support her decision to do that, and her "right" to engage in "adult" activities. It's just a contradiction to call her shy when she's obviously sexually active. I was not judging her morals. Please think a little longer before you make inappropriate comments.
