What kind of message does that send to criminals? You kill a few people and then the government takes care of you for the rest of your life. What a great deal.
Worried that you'll get bullied in prison? Just kill a few fellow inmates, then they'll leave you alone. Don't like the confinement? You are guaranteed time outside everyday. Don't like the other inmates? Beat a few people to within an inch of their life and you get solitary.
No decent person thinks like this right? But then again a man that brutally stabs a woman to death for not wanting him (Robert Newland) or woman that kills her husband and children for insurance money (Frances Newton) can hardely be considered decent.

Some people kill to get the death penalty.
Some people kill to get taken care of for life.
Some people will find death worse than a life term.
Some people will prefer death over a life term.

I wish the guys who killed my dad got the DP. Seems sometimes that more effort is giving to those who commit the crimes than to the victims. And then you get to get out on good behavior?
Amnesty should put their efforts into reducing crime and then perhaps the death penalty would be gone. Criticizing the punishment and not the crimes boggles me.

I know that across time I've seen too many innocent people just about executed and with the cost of trials, appeals and stays it's more cost effective to keep death penalty convicts locked up forever. < :-)

article: Last year [2008] saw only 37 executions in the U.S., the smallest number in more than a decade, according to the human rights group, which opposes the death penalty.
