Is it actually up or are people reporting it more now? Regardless, the US needs to get a handle on the anti-Muslim feelings.

It 's terrible . I sometimes hear my American neighbors saying Muslims need to try and fit in more, and become more American. Hate crimes like that have no place .

Good grief, what a biased article.
So so-called anti-muslim hate crimes "rose" to 160 cases, while anti-Jewish hate crimes "sank" to 887.
Using the same figures, the article headline could as well be: Antisemitic hate crimes 5 times the number of anti-muslim hate crimes. And it would be interesting to check how many of the antisemitic hate crimes came from the muslim community. But don´t expect the journalist or Obamas administration to look at that angle.

Theres no community or group in America shows higher support for our president than the Muslims do. They accept him like he is one of their own. It amazes me. So you he has their back. He promised that in his autobiography, which was a best seller.

jeremiah, you saying that muslim americans dont accept many of their fellow yanks, sure sounds like it, if so its a wonder US muslims dont have MORE problems

Hate crimes up? I guess the workings of the press and certain net posters and bloggers have worked their magic. How lame that people are so weak as to eat the barf they spew.

This is a complex problem with some challenging solutions however the media can play a very positive role in promoting inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue and harmony. This is what is expected from responsible journalism. On the other hand, the media may also play a very negative and divisive role in projecting wrong and inaccurate messages. Therefore, with due respect to the freedom of expression, governments can assist or encourage creation of self-regulatory media bodies to deal with manifestations of discrimination and racism. However the real threat to tolerance and to multicultural societies emanates from the extremes of both groups. And here the governments and the public should remain vigilant for peaceful co-existence to become reality. Hence we must reach out to groups who do not wish to engage in dialogue and we must educate those who do not wish to learn or understand or accept the diversity that characterizes our societies.

You dreaming peaceful coexistance will never be reality when you have people who's sole aim is to destroy the culture of the other group.

A hate crime must be extremely difficult to prove. If you kill someone you hate, is that a hate crime? If you kill someone because you hate people, is that a hate crime?

Someone here clearly doesn't seem to understand what a hate crime is...

I'm seeing 160 anti-Muslim crimes out of a total 6,628 hate crimes? I can't imagine JT would use such a small percentage for the headline. Unless they are whores.

@just-a-guy:
Please learn a little bit about history before writing such stuff. The US of today and Germany 90 years back is a completely different situation.
Let's start with this: the US has been a democracy from its start. They are throwing their liberal, democratic state away now. Germany had been a fresh democracy in the twenties, when democratic ideas had not been absorbed by the population yet because they were too new. In the US there is another reason why democratic values are on the wane.
Next, Germany had to pay extreme reparations for WWI. Large parts of the German industry had been taken away by the Allies of WWI. No criticism on my part. From the point of view of that age, these were the right decisions. Large parts of Germany had been devastated in the war and the population had been starving during the war. The old elites from imperial Germany were still in charge behind the scenes.
Now which one of these applies to the US? The costs for the US American wars is purely the cost for maintaining the wars. The US doesn't pay any reparations at all. The Iraq war had been started deliberately without any need. Old Europe opposed such a stupid war, while the Anglosaxon governments thought it was a good idea. It was not like the general warlike mood in Europe, where Austria and Germany were just those to first jump on the opportunity of going into war. Luckily for us Germans, too, that our ancestors lost in the end.
The US has never, ever been devastated in a war by anyone else. A few islands had been ravaged in WWII and the WTC has been destroyed in a gigantic act of crime (not war) - but there has never, ever been any act of war from another country on US American territory in the last two centuries. Then we have democracy. With almost 250 years of age in the US, it is hard to call that new. They even try to export it to other countries. Maybe it is not accepted in parts of the population. Well they regularly express their opinion when voting and leave a clear fingerprint in US policy. Finally the old elites. Any old noble families closely related to the American emperor present, which manipulate the nation behind the scenes? Well, maybe the Bush and Kennedy clans count? Otherwise, there is none that I could find...

The reason is.. and i live in America.... is because people are tired of seeing what is happening in America and across the world.... i can't turn around without seeing another bomb explode from this so-called " Religion of Peace"... nobody can say one word or print one article about Islam without the entire Muslim community getting outraged then bombing somebody .. like the Newspaper company or whoever.. America is tired of this intolerant religion and all thier frivolous law-suits claiming their rights are being violated..

@Johannes, America's "old noble families"
Besides the Kennedy and Bush political dynasties, there are plenty of current office holders (or running for it) that are the sons of prominent politicians, making their bid to be the next "old elites."
Jerry Brown, governor of California; son of former governor of California Ben Quayle, U.S. rep from Arizona; son of former U.S. vice president Mitt Romney, former governor and governor's son Harry Reid, Nevada U.S. senator, and his son, a U.S. rep (?) from Nevada
The Gores and Clintons should be included in a list of dynastic families. The American southwest is full of politically powerful families such as the Udalls and the Salazars. Anyone have more examples?

I would still rather live in 1920's Germany than modern day China.

After ten years, more than 6000 casulaties, multi trillion dollars has been spent, a chaotic economy, a huge group of frustrated veterans seeking for jobs, an uncompetence administration and a group of crooks serving in the congress who knows nothing! The angry crowds has got to blame over somebody being 'scapegoast' to appease their angers!

just-a-guy
@Pukey2: There is no need to discuss with people who brings up Germany 1920s and modern China, that was totally irrelevant and groundless! At least China has never defeated like America! Both Iraq war and Afghanistan war were defeated with zero objectives met, thats why the angry crowds needs to blame someone!

What is going on in the USA? In America there is suppose to be freedom of speech. Unfortunately Americans are being robbed of their rights. Many Americans no longer want to live in the USA. If an American peacefully talks to a Muslim who chooses to lie they can be charged with a hate crime simply for peacefully talking to a Muslim. Americans are being deprived of their rights of free speech in America. I know of someone who peacefully had a chat with a Muslim who was falsely accused and charged with made up crimes. I don't recommend anyone travel to the USA at this point in time. It is unlawful and unsafe.
