So what exactly would he say he tried to do??? What an a-hole this guy is. Prison for life is the best thing for this guy. Death is too easy and doesn't require suffering for a long period of time. He deserves a long life of anguish just like he has given the families of the victims and the remaining living victims.

Innocent until proven guilty, he can plead "not guilty" as much as he wants but its not going to help since there is plenty of evidence. Mentally disturbed won't stop him from being punished as he is competent enough to know what he did.

This nut case needs to HANG! He needs to be executed in public! ASAP, so he has a few mental problems, too bad! BURN IN HELL YOU EVIL BASTARD!

I think most of the posters on this site will agree with Loughner's not guilty plea. After all, they all know that either Rush, Palin, Beck, or some vast right wing conspiracy did the crime. You saw the black helicopters flying away during CNN's wall-to-wall coverage of the event didn't you?

Maybe he is pleading not-guilty to the assassination attempt. Maybe he just wanted to kill a bunch of people and Giffords and her entourage just happened to be there as well.

"I didn't want to kill her specifically, I just wanted to kill her generally".

I do not like Rush, Palin etc..but I do not think this is the right time to make jokes about such a horrible tragedy, although I do agree, at some level, these right wing nut cases do have blood on their hands, with all their jingoism and hate that they spew, but this fool in Arizona needs to be killed off ASAP.

LOL, yes that is pretty much the gist of most of the posts here. If evil Sara Palin made him do it, he is indeed innocent.

This nut case needs to HANG!

This is the irony. Everyone was and is saying what a nut job he is. My guess is his lawyer will eventually claim he is not guilty by reason of insanity. Thus, he will be spared the death penalty. Can't have it both ways folks.

The killer hated George Bush. That will work in his favor with the liberals who get involved in the case.

he's got an ACLU lawyer" really? So, even if its not Palin, they're gonna make it Palin

The insanity plea should be reserved for the people who drew up Arizona's gun laws.

    Pot, meet kettle.

Innocent until proven guilty, though with all the witnesses, the proving is little more than a formality.

"Claiming" that he is LEGALLY insane is not the same as "proving" that he is LEGALLY insane. Doesn't matter what the internet decides. If the defense can't prove it to the courts satisfaction, Loughner faces life in prison or possible lethal injection. Multiple murders warrents the death penalty in Arizona.

Gee, do you suppose that's why it's called a trial?

Doesn't matter what the internet decides.

I should hope not. In the threads on this topic we've seen the right-wingers claim that Loughner was way too crazy to have been influenced by any of the inflammatory, violence-laced political rhetoric, yet perfectly rational enough to know what he was doing.

I believe Loughner will be found "not guilty" by reason of insanity.

I think your reading skills are arrestedpaul. I AM talking about what the lawyers are going to try to prove in court. This is just my guess though. Time will tell.

No, you talked about what "everyone" was saying followed by Loughner's lawyer's claim of insanity and then concluded (ie Thus) he will be spared the death penalty simply because an "insanity defense" was attempted.

Loughner chose to have his case decided by a judge instead of a jury. I'm told that judges have a better understanding of the law than do juries. ;) Loughner's lawyer can attempt to use the extremely hard to prove "insanity defense". If the defense fails to prove that Lougher was insane, at the time of the murders, as defined by legal statute, the judge would have no reason to considered the failed attempt when he finds Loughner guilty of multiple, premeditated murders and sentences him to a life in prison that ends when the State injects him with a cocktail of lethal chemicals.
