As spill grows, oil soaks delicate marshes, birds

If BPs efforts now were not so sad it would be a comedy. The lack of preparation for this spill is so typical of oil companies who shave costs by increasing risk. Its criminal really when public resources such as the Gulf are being poisoned.

    Spill Baby Spill.

And how do you know that, Zucronium? Exactly what efforts would you have commanded if BP was under your enlightened leadership? Thanks for sharing.

If they let it continue to leak, eventually it will be empty and problem solved.

I'd have started pumping in mud a long time ago.

If I couldn't fix it I'd have spoken up a long time ago. I canm't do it, I want help. But that's against BP's practice.

They have been trying to figure a way out so they could keep it in operation. It's a lost proposition now. < :-)

And your engineering experience in the oil industry is exactly what?

I just love all these instant armchair experts here.

The more I hear about this, the more hopeless it seems...

WilliB: As opposed to YOUR expertise, I suppose?

Perhaps BP ought not to have shirked their responsibilities and had the emergency shut off system on the rig, but I guess going by the law is just too impractical.

Anyway, I got a kick out of reading the news today where the dolt palin suggested that Obama is in bed with Big Oil. Utterly hilarious to hear a crank like her lecturing someone else about the dangers of not being strict with oil companies like BP. BP should be criminally prosecuted.

I do not claim expertise. But I assume that BP is trying the best to stop this, and was asking what qualifies the readers forum pundits here to insist they know better.

Crude oil is spilling naturally in many places by the way, and nature does deal with it. Of course, locally a spill like this looks horrible, and of course it should be stopped. But it is not the end of the world. I was at one of the beaches where the Torrey Canon gunk landed, and today nothing is to be seen of it.

    Describe your systems.

For starters, if there was even an outside chance that something like this could have happened there should have been systems in place to minimize the damage. If there were no systems to prevent this kind of accident then they should have never gone ahead with the drilling in the first place. Saying, "Whoops we never could have imagined this" is an outright lie. In fact, at this point calling it an accident is really being euphemistic, it's negligence pure and simple.

By the way, why does the press use "liters" instead of the usual tons to describe the size of the oil spill?

Is that to obfuscate the topic, or to make the numbers sound more dramatic?

WilliB, I've got none. But it appears that neither does BP. We've been waiting for over 30 days for BP to cap this mess and they have failed miserably. Where is Halliburton and their concrete? But no they played weeks trying to capture instead of stopping. < :-)

Pres. Obama has really dropped the ball on this. He shouldn't have allowed BP to take the lead because they are only interested in profit margins.

Then again, if he does anything, the mouth-breathers will all start screeching "socialism."

    adaydream:

    " WilliB, I've got none. "

Exactly. So why do keep playing expert here. I assume BP has a hell of a lot more expertise on the subject that "adaydream" has. And I assume that BP is doing their best, and will eventually plug it.

So what is the point of these rants? Accidents do happen. Planes should not crash, nuke power plants should not have malfunctions, chemical plants should not explode. Yet, sometimes, they do. And because our modern industrial world needs all these, we have them.

Accidents? There have been mistakes, failed BOP tests, concrete not pumped in properly, bad batteries, alarms turned off and I believe the list goes on. These aren't accidents, these are lapses in SOP and safety. These aren't accidents, these are screw ups. Accidents, ha. And you want to give them a free pass? < :-)
