This is sad. If the US hadn't veered off course and gone into Iraq -- having nothing to do with the 'war on terror' -- they could have helped finish the job where it existed. Instead, they went into Iraq illegally and created a whole new problem, opening a huge vacuum for recruiting new terrorists and strengthening the Taliban anew. Now it's too late for either country.

If not for the U.S., both countries would still be under the boot of awful dictatorships.

In fact they still are. The awful dictatorships were turned into the awful civilian wars - the cure is worse than the disease. Sadly, "Leave'em alone" is not an answer any more. Well, the question is who'll be next after the US got completely tired and march its troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan?

sarge: "If not for the U.S., both countries would still be under the boot of awful dictatorships."

THANKS to the US, in Iraq at least very soon they'll be another dictator in place, and probably worse than Saddam. It'll be a simple case of 'history repeats itself' -- the US supporting wrongful 'regime change' and the result being worse than before the change occurred. There's already been one reported coup attempt in the works, and you already have Iraqi police beating and subjecting a man to torture who spoke out (threw a shoe at bush). Now they're trying to cover it all up and make it seem nice since the world's attention is on it. In other words, sarge, Iraq is getting as bad as it was before, and will soon be worse. Thanks to bush and the US.

In Afghanistan, too, things are getting to be the way they were before, and if the Taliban gets even more strongholds than it has now, you can bet they're going to be FAR more ruthless with their treatment of people who try to defy them. 'tis a shame the US never bothered to finish the job they started, but it's certainly not the first time, nor have they learned under bush anything from history. Fortunately, Obama will at least change that in regards to any new problems. As to these ones, as I said, it's already game over. Karzai? Hahaha.... he's about to start bowing down to the Taliban at the same time as he complains to the US and UN, saying to the former he wanted them back in power all along (as their leader), while begging the latter groups for help at the same time. He'll please no one in his attempts to please all.

It's over sarge.... just get ready to remember you supported it all, before you conveniently forget.

The Left just can't stop wishing for civil war and or the worst possible outcomes in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Amazing.

Mr. Smith, Obama says the action in Iraq will continue until "the generals" say otherwise. Obama also wants to send more Allied troops in to Afghanistan, allegedly to go after Bin Laden.

I don't remember Obama tellin' you about this when he was runnin' for prez. If you supported Obama, don't conveniently forget that you did.

Tis a shame smithinjapan doesn't realize we're still in Afghanistan, keeping the Taliban from taking over the country while the Afghan government continues to strengthen their forces to the point where we can leave, as will happen in Iraq in 2011 or perhaps even sooner.

Mr. Smith, you do realize the Brits are fightin' right alongside US troops and vice-versa, right?

USA will have to give up the plan of wanting to play the role from everything from park ranger, search and rescue, world police force because the country is bankrupt.

Canadian troops are in Afghanistan too. One of them got killed just the other day.

    "USA... is bankrupt."

Yeah, we're thinking of eliminating foreign aid.

    "As Taliban nears Kabul"

This headline is misleading. You would think the government is near collapse and the Taliban are poised to take over Kabul again, which is not the case, and will never happen.

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk reports (Dec 26)

The Taliban have ordered the closure of all girls’ schools in the war-ravaged Swat district and warned parents and teachers of dire consequences if the ban is flouted. In an announcement made in mosques and broadcast on radio, the militant group set a deadline of January 15 for its order to be obeyed or it would blow up school buildings and attack schoolgirls. It also told women not to set foot outside their homes without being fully covered. “Female education is against Islamic teachings and spreads vulgarity in society,” Shah Dauran, leader of a group that has established control over a large part of Swat district in the North West Frontier Province, declared this week. […] The militants have also prohibited immunisation for children against polio – claiming that the UN-sponsored vaccination drive is aimed at causing sexual impotence – causing a sharp rise in cases of the disease.

It is well known that the opium trade is how the Taliban finances much of its Islamo-fascist agenda.

The European market is their biggest cash cow.

Does this not shame the pro-Euro, sham pacifist Left?

Karzai has proven to be a puppet yet again. What's his nickname? The Mayor of Kabul, right? Nobody has learned the lessons of history on Afghanistan. Nobody takes it and keeps it. Nobody, except maybe the Taliban. Let them have it!

"Let them ( the Taliban ) have it ( Afghanistan )"

Don't be absurd. We tried that. We got 9/11 for that.
