Not too sure what went wrong with this guy as a kid, maybe he was bullied their on the beaches of Oz and now he feels he has to make up for that somehow?? Any Aussies here have any juicy info on the background of this guy??

He believes these allegations are politically motivated?? Wow! I guess he could get himself a million dollars if that was the so called million dollar question! When you are putting up SECRET INFORMATION on say, American troops out in Iraq, etc..to let the whole world know what American troops are doing etc..and then Al Qaeda gets this info on your WIKILEAKS homepage and uses the info to KILL American/NATO etc..troops, does this idiot bloke from down under think the USA etc..will just sit around and let the FREEDOM OF SPEECH idea, keep getting American/NATO etc..soldiers killed because this fool with the horrible hair style and hentai look feels that he has some kind of GOD GIVEN MISSION to put all the dirty secrets of the USA etc..out on the INTERNET for the WHOLE WORLD TO look at?? This guy is lucky the CIA is not torturing him right now!

I would tend to agree. It is likely that there is a great deal of money and diplomatic pressure aimed at getting him to Sweden that has very little to do with the rape charges against him, but have to do with the desire of the USA to get their hands on him for releasing sensitive information.

I have mixed feelings about Assange. I believe in freedom of the press, and I believe he is sincere in his desire to expose wrongdoing by the US and other countries. I also believe that some of the information released has caused harm, not just embarrassment. There is a fine line to be walked in having freedom of the press, and more self-regulation is needed than has been shown.

Still, this article is about a rape charge, not about his other activities, and I think he is correct that the amount of time, money, and legal shenanigans directed against him is not about that charge. It is politically motivated.

The guy is a slimeball. No need to keep on re-proving how Western democracy works.

Get him to Sweden and get those charges out of the way. After that he's free to to what he likes.

At the moment he's wasting everyone's time, patience and tax money.

But that's the exact problem. There aren't any charges. And as Swedish police refuse to charge him, he shouldn't be extradited. That's Assange's case and it looks pretty fair to me.

Swedish cops: "Hand over that man, a legal British resident to us, against his will."

British courts: "What's he charged with?"

    Swedish cops "Er... nothing."

British courts: "Well, er... no, then."

Sorry, lucabrasi, not quite right. Sweden is considering charging him with rape, at the request of two women.

The authorities need him to appear there.

Sounds like he's afraid there might be some truth in it...

British courts: "Well, er... no, then."

Wrong. At every stage the UK courts have said he can be sent to Sweden. All that happens is that he gets allowed to make an appeal - and then told he has to be extradited anyway.
