    Whew! Bruce Willis didn't have to blast off on a space shuttle with the wrong stuff to drill a hole in it, drop a nuke in it and blow it apart!

    A closely tracked asteroid, about 45 meters wide, whizzed safely past Earth on Friday, the same day a much smaller, previously undetected meteor hit Russia, injuring nearly 1,000 people.

    I wonder which one is more important? Talk about clueless.

    Sure glad the asteroid is safe. I was really worried about whether it would be alright.

    We're in for a new round of asteroids and meteors hitting us...

    Who's clueless, in your opinion? And why would you imagine that every object approaching Earth should be trackable? That suggests a serious lack of understanding about the size of space, and the impossibility of covering all of it, all the time..

    I am not sure it went by safely. Some people in Russia may not totally agree with that.

    Poor Russia!! But they are the largest country in land size on the face of the earth so the odds of something Russia vs Switzerland ??

    @Vernie

    The Russian asteroid was entirely unconnected, travelling in the opposite direction. Just a coincidence.

    Lucabrasi, I did not know that, can you provide some links?? Not that I do not believe you but would like to read up on these crazy meteors falling out of the sky, you know they may just kind of ruin your day, life??

    @Elbuda

    I'm on my mobile so difficult to give a proper link, but this from an article in www.guardian.co.uk

    "Scientists, along with NASA, have insisted that the meteor was nothing to do with the asteroid, since they appeared to be travelling in opposite directions."

    Telescopes only work when the earth is dark -otherwise they would have seen and tracked it. Could be that everyone with a telescope was primarily on 2012 DA 14.

    Asteroid (rock in space orbiting the sun) --> Meteor (rock in earth atmosphere) --> Meteorite (rock or parts that did not get vaporized in the Earths atmosphere and made it to ground safely)
