Horrific. Prayers to those families who are suffering with this.

The footage from the BBC is horrendous - a whole line of vehicles burned beyond recognition. A rainy, foggy night, poor visibility and a distracting fireworks display nearby (Thank you , Guy Fawkes) are being cited as possible causes.
Also great heroism showed - people being dragged out of blazing cars by others who had managed to avoid injury.
Thoughts to the victims and their families, and to those desperately trying to find out in the chaos if any of their own loved ones were involved.

Fog...rain...trucks...motorway...
A lethal combination, and having driven in the UK last year, and seen the trucks ignoring road conditions, speeding, tailgating and changing lanes suddenly, it comes as no surprise. A bit like Japan in that respect.
Respect to the emergency services who have to clean the mess up, can't be a great job.

Don't mess with FOG! Rain is one thing, but in FOG, you have to slow down because you will not be able to see anything, best is to pull off of the highway, to a rest area, service area etc..let the fog burn away, because burning up in a ball of fire must be a horrible way to die. RIP

While I understand the weather condtions assisting the the cause of the accident I really would like to know what started the ignition for flames and explosions to go from car to car. We've had lots of pile ups and car accidents in the US but never any flaming crashes which spread fires and explosions like this. Are there safety measures imposed on car manufacturers to reduce the chances of rupturing gas tanks etc? I can understand if the cause of the fire was a truck carring flammable or hazardous material, but it should not have spread like this.
Very horrible, but its good to see there are always heros in everyday life willing to assist others with their own lives at stake.
