Australia intercepts boat with 194 refugees

Erm, isn't that how Australia was created in the first place ? If it weren't for the European refugees then it would still be called Torres Strait Island or Melanesia.

Australia was initially populated by British criminals who were at the time living in overcrowded prison boats floating on London's River Thames.

Which effectively means that pretty much every white Australian who is not related to a legal immigrant is a descendant of a criminal.

    Can anyone vefify this?

Descendants from convicts, that we are, though many did come as free settlers. Not that it matters much these days, no one really cares if your family tree has a few crims here and there from 150+ years ago.

Favourite convict joke: UK bloke arrives in Australia and is asked by the immigration officer, "Have you got a criminal record?". UK bloke replies, "Didn't know you still needed one".

Apparently there are now approximately 21 million more criminals in Australia then there were in 1850...

there was a lot of political prisoners sent to Australia, rather than the freedom of America. England also bullied their British Isles partners, and forced departure from land a lot. So not exactly criminal, political. The refugee issue and the economics, and circumstances leading to the choice of getting on a boat, is interesting.

Australia doesn't have to just admit anyone northlondon. it's an established country. Don't try to turn it into your country that accepts it's own enemies.

I reckon Australia's relatively few problems are from the lingering Birtish influence.

You seem to be very disparaging of Australians northlondon. Not sure why they are the constant target of your cheap trolling. You swing between trying to present intelligent statements in some threads back to farcical comments which are more likely a reflection of your own self loathing.

The Australian government has a responsibility to investigate all those trying to enter the country and also to discourage people smuggling which is often a part of these "refugee" situations. How many refugees organise a boat, food and fuel for themselves and dozens of others then set out on a journey they may not survive?

UNHR Freejack citizens seem to be on rise, all over the world.

Australia just do not have enough water resources to accept more.

May be someone can gift them with more desalination towers.

Ha,ha,ha,ha. Oh, the Australian posters defending this news story just don't have a sense of humour do they ? Come on people, it's blatantly obvious when someone is having a little bit of fun with this article about refugees being intercepted in Australia. Why are you people so serious about everything ? Didn't the Aussies invent sledging in cricket ? But you can't take a little bit of a wind-up back in return ?

Being a Brit myself, I cannot disagree with that statement.

I take it back. There are now approximately 21 million political criminals in Australia than there were in 1850.

northlondon: whatever we are, we are happy and wealthy and take in 300,000 legal immigrants a year including Pomms. Most illegal immigrants come by plane. Australia is concerned about exploitation of desperate refugees by people smugglers - we have no idea how many refugees tragically get lost at sea. As our former PM Mr. Howard said, we will decide who comes to this country and the circumstances for which they do. We even take Pomms with weird senses of humour.

Give them intensive English and culture lessons, and if they pass, give them a passport.

Den Den: The trouble is some Pomms have no time for humour, they are to busy feeding their winging, slagging and mocking in the midst of Australian plenty. For them that is culture. Australia has a non-disciminatory immigration policy. You would get in on wit alone.

    Which was preceeded by:-

Not much humour in that lecture now was there.

Australia has a non-disciminatory immigration policy.

Which is in direct contradiction to the official line:-

but obviously it was very disappointing to see this boat arrive yesterday,” he said.

we’ve committed an awful lot of resources recently to try and combat these arrivals.”

And the same for all the Brits making their way to Oz.

No chance. Bloody illiterate uncultured lot those Brits are.

The Brits just want to escape the notorious UK weather and go to a country where they don't have to learn a new language, just a different accent. Of course, Oz is always going to make the top 3 choice of destinations. Not sure why so many personal negative comments are directed at northlondon?

northlondon: For your edification, because I am missing the humour somehow in your comments, a non-discrimination policy is one in which we take people from all nations, creeds, religions etc. It is not an open door policy. You seem confused. There is also a long que and many try to que jump others. Australia takes about 15,000 refugees a year plus some que jumpers. What is more, all these different people (180 different nationalities) get on really well with little racial or ethnic tension.
You may not have noticed but we have the Union flag in the top left hand corner of our flag and that design has about 99% support in Australia. We voted a decade ago to reject a Republic for the existing Constitutional Monarchy with the Queen as our head. We love Great Britain here and all it has delivered to us. If you guys could only play AFL football and cricket the world would be a better place. You don't understand the peace making all inclusive fun delivered by the Sherrin.
