Time for Australia to pull it's socks up and stop moaning at other countries about methods of food production.

Good one there buddy, lets see an issue was identified and the staff sacked or moved to other positions and the abattoir immediately shut until investigations where completed. Not to mention the massive fines and jail time hanging over this idiots head for his actions (as a person who has raised livestock for slaughter in the past l say throw the book at these people). But let me say this, as soon as the issue was identified something was done about it so when you say stop moaning at other countries methods l will say this. At least when we have an issue we have the mental ability to take immediate and positive action to resolve the situation (how many people are now stood down from their jobs due to this?) unlike the Japanese who blunder around for months or years while ignoring world opinion. Unlike Japan, Australia is prepared to take actions to uphold laws regarding animal treatment how does your nation do on that front?
Moderator: Japan is not relevant to this discussion. Nor are whaling and dolphins.

whatever this is about if its referring to pigs, well some must realize they are dangerous animals not easily slaughtered. I remember a pig that had to be put down, and over 10 bullets didnt penetrate it. I remember stories of how the owner of a pig farm coming home drunk and must have fallen into the pen because only his feet and shoes were left hanging over the right side of the fence. oh and this was Australia.

Well who ever was shooting it was a very poor shot. I have raised pigs for slaughter and also slaughtered them myself for consumption and use either a .22 rifle or a captive bolt gun to do the job and have never had to have more than one shot to dispatch the animal. Any more than one shot is cruel and shows the person doing the slaughter has no idea what they are doing
Yes pigs will eat anything especially when they are hungry. Great way to get rid of a body (apparently!!!)

They were working in an abattoir, killing animals. Why would you imagine they had not received proper training or been informed of the rules regarding the slaughter of animals?
Mod, my previous post was deleted with the comment 'Please repost without the reference to whales and dolphins'. I see that ihope2eatwhales and Cletus are allowed to post long comments with plenty of reference to whales. (It's surely the only reason ihope2eatwhales is even on this thread) I'm not saying their posts should be deleted; I'm saying it's not fair do's.

They were "casual staff", just working at the place does not guarantee us that their employer appropriately trained them according to regulations etc. It is harsh to assume these workers are guilty from the start.
I saw a Sydney Morning Herald story which reveals that the abattoir was inspected 4 times in 2011. No problems were identified.
If we are to believe that the media focus on these workers is not the main reason why it is regarded now as a problem, it may indicate many problems besides just with the workers.

Sorry buddy but your way off the mark their. People working at abattoirs in Australia (casuals included) need to undertake a 1 year apprenticeship before they can work their. This involves training and education both hands on and theory (classroom training) in law (OHS, hygiene, regulations, etc). So regardless of the employer training they have had independent nationally recognised training before starting work.
Like the idiot is going to hit the animals in front of the inspectors. Obviously someone wasnt happy with his actions as they filmed him in action.
