Yet another one of buffoon Abbotts political stunts that has backfired spectacularly. His Gestapo-like "Border Force" was created for purely political reasons, and this planned crackdown was simply planned to whip up fear. Thankfully Aussies generally cherish the right to free movement and will - hopefully - never tolerate the authoritarian "random" ID checks of individuals on the street that exists in less free societies.

These spot visa checks are commonplace in Japan. I've been checked at least once a year. However, I don't feel as if it is 'authoritarian' as suggested above. Personally, I think Australia needs random visa checks to weed out illegals a lot more than Japan does.

BurakuminDes,

There's nothing wrong with Visa and ID checking on peoples in the street. The Operation Fortitude was nothing to do with PM Tony Abbot and his Canberra office. The Operation Fortitude was planned by Victoria Police Force. The Police officers will transfer Visa offender to Border Protection unit if they found Visa offenders. The Vic was Labor State mate.

If Police officer asked me my identity and whether I was Australian Citizen or foreign national and then I'm happily co-operate with Police and Border Protection officers. They are doing their job and our good Citizens should support their work.

Idiot Green idea of “peoples’ right to free movement” was stupid idea. Look at what's happening in Europe now. Current chaotic situation in Europe doesn't seem to be supporting idiot Green's stupid and idiot ideology of "right to free movement" mate. Now EU states are checking peoples ID and bags. Peoples are sleeping on the ground and on the road side. There are no job, no foods and no shelter for those poor migrant peoples.

If Labor has staying power for another six year and then Australia will look like what happen in Europe today and will have to bankrupt like Greece Government. Thanks to PM Tony Abbott and former Immigration Minister Scott Morrison for fixing for Labor chaotic immigration policy.

Tony Abbott Coalition Government was best Government we have in Australia since John Howard Coalition Government.

@ Chop Chop - Im not sure if you are just having a laugh here. But if not, if you like that sort of thing, great. Go and live in China where ID checks (and worse) for "public safety reasons" are commonplace. I can promise you this: Australians have never and will never tolerate ID checks for no reason on the street. Any government of any stripe would be annihilated at election if this was implemented. End of story.
