About time more politicians were for this kind of thing. It's only a matter of time as well before nations like the US (meaning government) finally realize gay people have rights too (and I'm not talking the 'rights' Michelle Bachmann speaks about with reference to gays).

They're right that it will cost votes -- the votes of bigots and the intolerant -- but it will also gain a lot of votes, particularly if they stand behind gay marriage because they believe in it and not just because they want the votes (or similarly hesitate because they're afraid of losing).

Hilarious. The article is about one of Australia's political parties endorsing something their most powerful member (the PM) is opposed to, but smithinjapan quite naturally thinks a minor congresswoman from the fly-over state of Minnesota, who craves the spotlight in US politics, is somehow relevant here. Bizarre. How about your adopted home of Japan, smithin? If you are so down on 'bigotry' why not vote with your feet and leave ?

And - for the umpteenth time - in the US same sex marriage is a states rights issue.

A list of the nations that allow same-sex marriages: Argentina Belgium Canada Iceland Israel Mexico The Netherlands Norway Portugal South Africa Spain Sweden United States

shows something rather interesting, I think. For all the reproach and criticism heaped on Christian and Judeo-Christian nations and peoples they lead the way here in granting their gay citizens the right to wed. Still, that list above (because the US has not made the right to same sex marriage a federal matter) means that of the total world population a mere 250 million people on the planet reside in nations where same sex marriage is legal. I'll be more persuaded by the 'arguments' of people like smith on this topic when they come here with some informed criticism of the countries and cultures and religions that are far,far less accommodating on the issue than is the US.

I wonder how the same-sex issue works on Australia's territories....... In the US, the same-sex issue will eventually go to the Supreme Court because ya can't have your marriage status fluctuate depending on which state ya currently reside in (ya can't be a married person in NY then become a single just by moving to Alabama), even though states usually work in reciprocity (meaning they honor each other's actions, so if NY makes ya a married person, then Alabama would honor that too).

    "gay marriage"

That's an arrangement where two men or two women live together and claim they always will.
It's not real marriage, though, because real marriage is where a man and a woman live together and claim they always will, simple as that!

Time changes the law and the law changes with time Tradition might not be the same for tomorrow. Your gay community contributed a huge chunk of tax money too. Plus they are found in every sector of the economy . If Australians can tolerate the influx of immigrants and nudist beaches. Gay marriage is not acceptable?

I agree with you johanssm, but if I pay a lot of $$$$ to take a flight down to OZ, I do hope these so called nudist beaches are, you know, regular beaches where we can check out the fine ladies, and if gays want to do their thing, romp on the beach etc..cool but I really do not want to see that, already seen enough of that BS back in California.

    Hey carrot top

your entitled to your opinion but this type of personal abuse does nothing to enhance the discussion...

The funny thing about rights is that they already belong to people. It's institutions like religious hierarchies and conservative governments that suppress peoples' rights.

This doesn't even make sense, but then, it does come from you.

"For all the reproach and criticism heaped on Christian and Judeo-Christian nations and peoples they lead the way here in granting their gay citizens the right to wed."

That's a fair point, since you want to bring up religion, save that the people most adamantly against gay marriage are often Christians who claim it's sacrilege and a marriage can only be 'between a man and a woman in the eyes of god' and bla bla bla, which kind of makes your point moot, especially since you attempt to chide me for pointing out the generalization that the US does not allow gay marriage but then talk about the nations you mention as though everyone in them were Christian. On the contrary; once again, those who are firm believers in Christianity are against same-sex marriage, same as people who believe strongly in other religions might be -- it's those who do not believe in said religion(s), or perhaps less so, that are for it. Way to shoot yourself in the foot and then put it in your mouth!

Ah, bigotry is alive and well! This is a prime example of a LACK of progress, and a good example of de-evolution.

The Labour Party was originally that, those that worked and laboured (thus the union connection, which in Aust. was basically the mines) and was rather Christian in it's leaning. Originally the Liberals were exactly that, liberal. Somewhere along the line, the liberals gained some cash (that could be the Nationals) and became what can be considered conservative. The Labour party being diminished and continuing to handle those persecuted led them away from their original values around christianity and the family-well that's my quick summary of it.

Oh well I must be bigotted- I just wouldnt know who to vote for. I guess Im in the line up for the next group to be persecuted and saved by labour.

Homo sexuality would be de-evolution, evolution involves pro-creating where as it's is impossible for a homo to pro create.

    Your agrument is fatally flawed.
