He doesn't appear to be Asian, so the question is why would a westerner do such a horrible deed?

Really a tragedy. I have been to Erawan Temple, and it's in a very busy crossroad, he wanted maximum damage. From the pics, he looks like a non-Thai. His reasons, only his sick mind may explain. Thailand is my favorite tourism destination. Hope Thais recover soon from this.

Very sad to see innocent people targeted in this way -a painful lesson much of the world has experienced first hand by now.

"why would a westerner do such a horrible deed"

Yeah, he looks non-Thai but I don't know about "westerner."

As to why, I recall that recently a crowd of Muslims in Turkey attacked the Thai embassy, forcing it to close. They demanded that Thailand accept around 100 Uighur migrants instead of sending them back to China, which viewed them as Islamist militants.

Strange, tho, there's no claim of responsibility.

He looks Caucasian (white) and resembles and I know I will get censored on this but he looks like a gamer who sits around playing software games in his pajamas all day long and lives with his divorced mother who pampers his odd behavior.

"playing software"

Heh.

To me he looks somehow like the Boston bomber, from the same ethnic area?

Looks as if they're interrogating an American man at this time. He seems to have come in the country using a false passport.

Right now, everybody is speculating., There are several parties who could have organized this, from Southern Thai islamists (who where responsible for 27 bombings last month alone) to international islamists to local Thai politial groups who want to undermine the Thai tourist industry.

I hope the truth comes out and they don´t just frame some hapless guy, as sometimes happens.

I've been here too. There are many interesting sites all around Thailand, which are worth a visit as well.

I will always have a warm place in my heart for Thailand and the Thai people.

During our visit a few years ago, the Red party decided to kill a few people and Thai security was heightened. There were daily protests with people driving around Bangkok in trucks with armed men in the truck beds. We watched one of these from an over-walk between two malls standing next to some Thai military who seemed disinterested.

I'm sure my view of Thailand is warped. I remember friendly, kind people and fun tourists from around the world all getting along. Any internal issues didn't impact our stay much beyond extra traffic in a few places. The locals we spoke with didn't really share political views, but they seemed to love the King.

While it seems like a free society, they do extensive internet blocking. I know this first hand, since a few of my websites are blocked from Thailand, but are not from other countries in the region. Just the websites, not the IPs. It is definitely national blocking - tried from many different locations and internet providers. All blocked these few sites, but not all of them.
