Blast kills 10 policemen in S. Afghanistan

KABUL —

Ten Afghan policemen were killed when their vehicle was blown up by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan, police said Sunday. The policemen were patrolling the Shah Walikot district of Kandahar province on Saturday when they were hit by the remote controlled bomb, said Matiullah Khan, the provincial police chief. ‘‘All 10 policemen in the vehicle including their commander were killed,’’ he said.

Yousif Ahmadi, a purported Taliban spokesman, claimed that the Taliban had carried out the attack and said they also blew up a second vehicle full of foreign soldiers, killing all of them. His claim about the second vehicle could not be independently verified. Afghanistan’s fledging police force has been the main target of the militants’ attacks in recent months. More than 700 police officers were killed last year.
