I'll bet this has something to do with what the Shiites did to a non-Shiite Muslim back in 680.

This is horrible. An attack at a funeral. Dispicable.
I see the turmoil in Pakistan and Afghanistan and I remember the article the other day about race relations in America. We have come so far in America. I see articles like this and then think about how we have worked through our problems to the point that we're at.
We need a Martin Luther King, Jr. in Pakistan. < :-)

What all the Muslin countries need is a secular education system for both boys & girls & in maybe 75 years we might get to see some change towards civilisation. This religion of peace is simply killing too many people, if they don’t have any Westerners to kill they turn on each other. And then they get such hurt feelings when the West fails to show them the respect they think their religion deserves. Only when they understand & show tolerance for others will I even think about doing the same for them.

grafton: "Only when they understand & show tolerance for others will I even think about doing the same for them."
The exact opposite can likewise be said. In fact, last I read this was about a group of Shiites being killed at a funeral, not an invitation to bash all Muslims; but do go ahead and lecture us about 'understanding and tolerance' towards others, my friend.
This is about sectarian violence, not about Muslims killing each other based on religion; it's happening the world over. Are the rebels in Darfur showing understanding and tolerance simply due to the fact that they are non-Muslims (since you brought it up)? It's much more about race/ethnicity than religion. Not surprised to find you on here sporting the lack of that which you proclaim others should have before you give it to them.

Smith are you telling grafton that he's starting to sound like you? I think the West should back a leader like Musharaf. Bring him back to take control and he should let Western forces into Pakistan to help fight this extremism. He can tell that to the general population that foreign troops are there only because of the extremist that are in the country. Make the extremists responsible for causing the cr@p they do.

The reasons the Shiites & Sunni kill each other IS a religious reason.
Do you also disagree that a period of secular education wouldn’t in time end the stupidity of these killings?
I am tired of this need people seem to have to be fair to Islam, I don’t see it has being a two way street, do you? I am withdrawing (have withdrawn) understanding & tolerance. Like many people I have had enough of listening to the c..p that we are made to listen to about this being a peaceful religion. It isn’t, so why are we (you) pretending that it is?
When I see Muslims making a REAL effort to protect the ·good” name of their religion I might start to believe something they have to say. I don’t want to listen to token self defensive rubbish from so called Muslim leaders that are too frightened of their own people to lead anybody anywhere.
