I wonder why people like you pretend that the US military is in any way in control of what happens in Iraq? It's 5 years since the invasion (supposed to be a walk in the park, with the invaders greeted with open arms, but in reality one of the most disastrous exercises in military history) and people in the Green Zone - supposedly the safest area of the country! - are being regularly bombed, injured and killed. And Muqtada al-Sadr just has to twitch his little finger and Baghdad is under curfew; drop it and the curfew is lifted.

I guess that at least Petraeus realises that he is stuck in a lose-lose situation by advocating that there are no more troop withdrawals.

they are only "stuck" as long as the wish success for a democratic Iraq. They could withdraw any time, but the people who advocate withdrawal should be realistic about what happens then... and it won`t luck pretty.

The dishonesty about the situation is shared by all political camps.

Interesting. Unlike madverts I'd have to say my criticism is reserved for Al Qaeda, its financial backers beyond Iraq's borders, Sunni deadbeats, and the clerics who brainwash young, confused, or disaffected Iraqis into believing that killing your fellow Iraqis is a religious duty.

Because the "insurgents," while human enough (in an abstract way) to be pitied for being between the US and its interests in the ME, are not truly human to the anti-liberation crowd - that would mean admitting they posess the same free will the rest of us have. And though they might come from Syria or Saudi Arabia it is only the Yanks who you can call "imperialists" and occupiers.

Honestly, how else to explain (one example) complete disregard for Iraqi points of view? Iraqbodycount.org's completely thorough on-the-ground mortality indices are cynically tossed aside for Lancet figguhs (figures) pulled out of some Lefty "bioethicist's" arse a week before the federal election in the US three years ago, and though repeatedly debunked, are still bandied about by the Left and by "pacifists" here.
