Al-Qaida has means to attack the US. It also has motive. It is looking for opportunity. I'm not aware of any study that indicates that the US or the West has made security gains significant enough to thwart an attack. Are you?
You are right that an isolated attack does not in itself mean anything. However, it is just as meaningful to say that the US is losing the war on terror as it is to say that it is winning it. The only accurate statement is that the US is engaged in a war on terror.
In wars, both sides propagandize. Some are inclined to believe the propaganda and others are inclined to be more skeptical. I'm inclined to be more skeptical. How about you?
I am angry. We thrust our problems on an innocent people. And yes, they were our problems. There are reasons why some people hate America enough to attack her, and they are not completely without merit. Mind you, it does not start with you and me, but our leaders and our greedy rich. But we follow them, and people hate us all for it.
You want an example? Operation Ajax. Tip of the iceberg of American meddling.
Now I am not saying that innocent Americans deserved to be attacked. But we are harboring some despicable people, much like the Taliban harbored al-Quaida and bin Laden. Well the Taliban took it on the chin for their error. We cowardly passed ours off onto the men, women and children of Iraq, but not before starving the crap out them sanctioning things like milk for ten years.
You ask whose angry. I raise my hand. Our dear leader wants a war based on lies, and our Congress goes "Baaa" like sheep and gives him the power. Our dear leader wants on invasion of a country that has done nothing to us, and our military goes "grrrr" like a dog to a child, because it is too scared of its master to bite the hand that truly deserves biting.
Angry? Right here. Outrageously angry. And if I stop, I can only imagine that shame will set in, shame so bad I might not be able to function.
It is great to hear al-Quaida is not doing so well these days. But if all you can do is celebrate, then you have obviously overlooked all the pictures of Iraqi children missing eyes and limbs. That is the face of your comfort.
I thought the question was why are some angry that we are winning. I'm not sure that we are winning and I'm not sure what winning would look like. So, to me, this question only begs a question. It's rather like asking why some people are angry that Mickey Mouse is dying.
If you're looking for reasons to be angry, there are plenty of them. I think you've touched upon most of the major ones. I think anger, however, can be counterproductive. For example, I think we had a lot of anger in connection with 9/11. I mean: how dare anyone do that to us! Our response was anything but measured and, to me, resembled the lashing out of a blinded beast. Somehow, though, I don't think what we have done this last 7 years was the most effective alternative.
I thought the question was why are some angry that we are winning.
Yes, but the question is loaded. People ARE angry and cannot find the spirit to cheer, and both for good reason. I was just explaining why, and its got nothing to do with al-Quaida in hard times.
There are people on this board who will view me and maybe you too as party poopers. And so, try to twist our anger into something it is not for the sake of their own selfish desire to not feel bad about what has occurred.
I think anger, however, can be counterproductive.
It can very productive. I think the counterproductive trouble was one of aim, and it is a recurring problem. For example, it is UTTERLY RIDICULOUS that this president has been allowed to remain in office. Nixon was forced to step down for a mere burglary. That pales by comparison.
Who's celebrating?
The wane of al-Quaida is something to celebrate, and some here do it regularly. I fully understand the desire to celebrate that. But the dastardly, and worse, incompetent, means by which it was done kills the party mood for anyone who is remotely reflective, which is why you and I are less than merry. The trillions in debt we have amassed does not help to relieve my conscience, and I was against it all from the start!
I'm not sure that we are winning and I'm not sure what winning would look like.
Not sure AND you know it well enough that you can admit it. That is the heart of wisdom. All compliments to you SezWho2.
ololo
al-Qaida = database
Now U.S. has a meaning to bomb Iraqi! ha-ha
just look now they will drop bombs everywhere and killing ppl, destroing buildings =)
They will defenetly search but not find some fatal virus or weapons of mass distruction.
U.S. is in crisis now but still it will use the money of people for military issues.
All a big lie!
I agree with what you say, including the comment that anger can be productive. If properly channeled or effectively sublimated, anger can be a potent energy source. But there is anger and there is anger. Blind rage, for example, is not so called without good reason.
You mentioned that the end of Al-Qaida (if there is one) is something to cheer but the means by which it was accomplished dampens your spirit of celebration. Understood. I'm not sure where I stand on the means versus ends argument. I'm probably inconsistent.
But I agree that to the extent that we are accomplishing Al-Qaida's end (and these bomb blasts are a constant reminder of job not yet done), I think we have chosen the wrong means. We may have even chosen the one means that is guaranteed to get us within sight of the promised land while preventing us from crossing over.

Deftly argued, comrade.
You postulate that Al Qaeda might not exist, but that we are nonetheless accomplishing their goals for them!
Lets see the right wingers wrap their heads around THAT one.Hahahahahahha, Too funny!
all thouse who are interested in the 9/11 tragedy and the so called al-qaida should see a movie by Giulietto Chiesa (italian reporter).
No wonder this cinema is prohibited to be shown in US and europe.
I guess you could read it that way. What I more had in mind is that the Al-Qaida of popular imagination might not exist and that Al-Qaida might instead be something a little less terrifying than the amount of press it receives.

Just a temporary glitch, the last gasp of the insurgency. No need to worry folks, Iraq is liberated. Bring the troops home.

Another case of Al-Qaida implosion. Clear as day.

rjd jr - Childish comment, ths Surge has worked very well.
SezWho2 - An isolated attack does not mean Al-Qaida have the means to attack the west again.
Why are some so angry that America is winning the war on terror, guess it speaks for itself.

It's another exemple of evil trying to halt our progress. however much some gloat over these attacks, we are winning. These attacks will soon cease.
Our good work is almost complete.
