This armed guards better be armed to the TEETH and ready to use deadly force, otherwise the Somalis etc..will over power them, take away their weapons, torture and kill them all to make them examples for other sailors. Have a nice monday mornin!

And high-time it is!
The problem with this policy is, of course, that the barbary pirates will now up-arm themselves.

Yes WilliB, this sounds like a kind of escalation of violence but maybe, just maybe it may DETER the pirates??

The number of ships under the British flag is very small so this ain't a big story!

There is a theory that as the seas options are closed off, they will increasingly stay on land and snatch victims for ransom from neighbo(u)ring countries.

The pirates are untrained, illiterate, and incompetent. Professional security contractors will be extremely effective.

The was once a large proud British merchant navy. The same can be said about the Japanese merchant navy with more foreign sailors than Japanese.
Since 1975, the number of UK-owned and registered vessels with a capacity of 500 gross tons or more has slumped from 1,600 to less than 300, while the number of British seamen serving on them has dropped from 90,000 to just 16,000.

They need to move against the root of this problem Somalia, sort this rogue state out once and for all and end the piracy, scratching at the surface solves nothing, but in saying this I know a couple of lads who are going to be stationed on some ships as security and they look forward to the high pay.

Somalia isn't the only country with pirates. Its now happening off the coast of Nigeria too.
