HA ha ha!!! This issue just gets nuttier by the week.
OBL has an aim to scare the pants of Americans - and now there's a bunch of Americans who - get this - are unwittingly helping OBL's scare tactics by supporting their government's moves to SPY on them, and then thinking they are doing something positive while not noticing they are supporting a bill that is not only backing the illegal protection of telecoms that participate in this spying, but that is also moving America one big step forward to becoming a Police State.
After so many Americans were conned into supporting the invasion of Iraq, one would think they would have maybe learnt something.
No, it's now pretty clear that an alarming number of Americans can - actually - be fooled twice.
This news has really made my day, I thought stupidity had limits.... :-)

In other words, a bunch of socialist America-haters trying to stop a program that could potentially prevent an attack on the US. Who'd of thunk?
I was warned of this when the Patriot Act first became law. Seven years later I'm still waiting. Am I in a Police State now? Are a few more years needed perhaps?
What I do need is to hear opinions about this issue from people other than the America-haters. America-haters will always oppose anything that could protect America from its enemies. So their opinions, which are always filled with hyperbole like this, are meaningless.

Does typing that still excite after 7 years? Does it - did it ever - pass for educated conversation in Australia?

Ah, the 'us against them' argument. I think you could ask any single poster on here who debates George W. Bush's presidency and its various and numerous disasters if they actually 'HATE' the US, and I'm willing to bet almost all, if not all, would say they don't. Anyone who does actually say they hate the US? well, then I'll side with you guys in saying they are irrational. What a lot of people HATE here, my friends, is the fact that a few nuts in power can take away the rights they pretend to be protecting, and can very well arrest you for what you write on this or any other internet site, as well as anything you say on a phone call, under the guise of protection. Ask if they hate Bush; ask if they hate his politics and the ideas he promotes and supports, as well as even possibly those who support him and said politics, and you may get many more yes responses. Assuming that any one who argues against such a bill therefore hates the entire US of A is simply falling into the paranoid trap your current government has set up. In other words, you're a sucker of your own system.

Not at all. Anyone who argues against such a bill doesn't mean they hate the US. I'm saying anyone who hates the US will argue against this bill. And it proves right every time. There are plenty of Jihadists who no doubt share your sentiments exactly about this bill.

Welcome to United Communist State Of America. The Bush government is going Stasi on its people and some people welcome it! The irony is complete. WOnder what it is like to live in constant fear and paranoia.

I hate this bill. I disagree with Bush on all of his policies. I am an American and I love my country with all my heart. So here's an opinion from a US lover.

A few nuts? Congress and the Senate have granted the president the means to do what the majority of Americans want the gov't to do to avert another 9-11.
The internet? - What country basically it possible? Cell phones? America, again.
"Grow up, people."

You prove my point so well... thank you. If I don't like the bill, according to your logic, I therefore hate the US and agree with 'the terrorists' (who are conveniently fit into a category of anyone who doesn't like you personally).
It's actually pretty sad that you can't see the forest for the trees. In a few years, if you have to have a license to walk the sidewalk you'll say it's my fault because 'I'm an American hater', etc. You let yourselves fall into such despairity and pain, but can never take responsibility and can only rely on the word of people who are in charge strictly because they are in charge, no questions asked. You are your own worst enemy, my friend, and in 10 years when you say, "It's not my fault!?", don't look to cry on my shoulder.
Seriously, anyone who believes 'this is how it has to be because the lord 'bush' says so,' is nothing short of laughable. If Bush demanded the state took over the National Lampoon (he might actually be qualified, based on all his gaffes, but still), you would then put it at your bedside and say I am a terrorist for believing that a man did not give birth to a baby in a watermelon. In other words, try opening your eyes a little..... but do it carefully, because your government is watching!

9/11 was the best gift Bush could ever dream of.

He's got it taped in a scrap book next to the picture of him saying 'Mission Accomplished'; the first time he flew in a fighter jet since his few and far between (and often skipped) 'training missions' he took while his buddies died for him in Viet Nam and he got drunk.

**That is one EXCELLENT post. **
I for one will say I do not hate America and never did.
I do, however, like the majority of Americans, have a big problem with the U.S. government.

DXXJP - "they ( the terrorists ) were never there until dubya stirred the s%#t"
Apparently you are unaware of all the terrorist attacks before 9/11. Look it up.
"people are fighting for their convictions over there"
You mean the people blowing up lines of people at police recruiting stations?

Another act to protect illegal acts by the president's direction.
Thank God he'll be out in 192 days. < :-)

Wrong. I'll try one more time. If you don't like the bill, it doesn't mean you hate the US. But if you hate the US, you likely won't like the bill.

Wait a second now - didn't Barack Obaman, the most Liberal member of the US Senate, vote in favor of this "controversial" new law to give immunity to telecom companies? And don't Liberals support Obama? There isn't much controversy over this issue in the US because it is supported on both the left and right. You could say there is a "consensus".
