I don't think I was making any assumptions. I think I was asking you why you think you support Georgia in following up on your comment that you thought you supported Georgia.
Whether a government has the right to assert its authority over any parts of its territory has no connection with whether it has been democratically elected or not. A democratically empowered government can stifle a minority just as effectively as a totalitarian one can. If it could not, we wouldn't bother with gerrymandering.
regarding South Osetia,
So, the next time we see any population, even as small as this one, we must throw our support behind them when they want to separate under all circumstances?
Well, I call for New Jersey, L.A., Miami, and Chicago to be separate states. Those of you who will not support us, are hereby considered bigots and anti-whatever I can come up with later on....
The Europeans are going to continue to buy their oil from Russia no
matter what, so that would be pretty useless.
Sanctions is a nasty way of forcing someone like Russia. Especially if we freeze there assets, I think that would put a hurting on them.
By assets I mean cold hard cash in US Banks throughout the world. I think that may get their attention, what ya think?
Or what? Sanctions? The Russians are laughing.
Read above, Russia needs cash, and guess what countries banks they have their cash in? Let me help, Putins cash is not in a Chinese bank or even a Russian bank. Yes the Swiss have some of it but guess who has the rest?
They have lots of oil they would have to sell it dirt cheap to make up what we would freeze.
Rice will be about as effective as the old fizzy drink we had as children. She might actually hit the water and she might even make a big fizz, but it's effect will be negligible if it has any effect at all.
Like we have real creditability in the world anymore. < :-)
What they are doing, among other things, is giving semi-free rein to militias from South Ossetia to cleanse all Georgian villages inside the South Ossetia, and probably to create a buffer zone as far as Gori to the south, I would imagine.
Perhaps when the Russians pull back we will see what has been going on behind their front.
Georgia was wrong, Russia was wrong, Bush was wrong.
Cleo knows everything! And does nothing. Man she could run for leadership of the UN!!
Be proud Cleo. You know you deserve it. Have a yelp or something.
Looking forward to more of your wisdom.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov characterized the Georgian leadership as a "vitual project" of the Bush administration.
Rice: "Georgia is a democratic government in the Caucasus that has elected leaders. To call it a project of anyplace, of anybody, perhaps belies more about what Russia thinks about its neighbors than what it thinks about U.S. policy."
Right on, Condi!
Oh, by the way, I see the Russians are moving troops back into Gori even though they promised to get out.

Sarge,
Georgian territory? That is what is in dispute.

Skip - In that case, we'd have to support South Carolina and Alabama seceding.

I believe what Georgia really wished the U.S. would send were troops and arms, not Rice.

Bush should make teh Russians to stop their warmongering right now. The US must make it clear we do not accept aggresion towards inocent nations.
Those Russians are getting too big for their boots, they are bullies.
