hey...you could bring some troops home from Iraq to help fight the fires?
Good, I was hoping the MODS would allow Iraq conversation in a thread about California fires. To answer your question, no, it would be stupid to pull out troops to help with fires.

That's not the thinking of many governors whose concern was only heightened by the federal government's response to Katrina. As the Washington Post reported back in June 2004:
The Iraq mission is placing new stress on the active-duty Army as it leans more heavily than it has in decades on the Guard -- which, with 350,000 troops, rivals the active force in size. That new reliance, in turn, is raising concerns about the Guard's long-term ability to recruit and retain troops, and it is provoking more immediate worries in states that rely on the Guard to deal with fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes.
I remember a few summers ago it was revealed that Oregon employed illegal aliens to fight their fires. This revelation was met with outrage but ya can't have it both ways....
MizBetzee, in my nation a state's governor has to request aid from the federal government. Because of "states rights" the federal government cannot simply take over... unless a state is found to be violatin' somethin' usually Constitutional... as was the case with "segregation" many decades ago.
Bush had one of his aides in frequent contact with that Democrat lady governor as the situation appeared to continually worsen askin' repeatedly for several days, "Do you want help now? Do you want help now?" She didn't request that help until she destroyed New Orleans. She, if anyone, destroyed New Orleans and killed people. Not Bush.
And then there's that mayor of "Chocolate Town (his words)" who did dumbarse stuff such as park evacuation buses in areas most likely to be flooded. You really can't blame someone who ain't smart enough to figure simple stuff like that out. Even the little yellow buses were there.
As for "The Washington Post..." I think you fare better overall if you started readin' "The Washington Times".
