Conservatives sweep to power in UK elections as Scotland debacle ruins Labour bid

When you consider that the opinion polls and exit polls tend to always benefit Labour and underestimate the Tory vote, no surprise here, then. What was predicted later on, but was devastating nevertheless, was the scale of the SNP win in Scotland. This will give a big push to the Scottish Nationalists and may result in this General Election being the last of its kind. May the political wrangling begin.

The Cameron scare tactics about Labour with the SNP helped him get this result. The price for it is Scottish independence - probably within the next parliament. A combined total of 3 MPs from the Labour, Liberal and Tory parties is beyond pathetic. Miliband must go along with Clegg.

Jimizo, good point. I find it laughably ironic that SNP voters who are overwhelmingly left wing, have screwed Labour's chance of getting in at Westminster though.

@DVDexpert You also have to say Labour failed miserably in England and Wales as well. Even if Labour had held the Scottish seats, the Tories would have still won it. Ed Balls lost his seat.

I think you'll find it was the Thatcher years which drove a wedge between England and Scotland and made the Tory brand toxic as she let the country go to ruin while siphoning off the oil to pay for her enormous benefits bill courtesy of 3 million on the dole after she demolished industry. Remember the Poll Tax experiment? I would agree that Labour also got their just desserts today for not attempting to do more about the utter devastation wrought by the Thatcherites. Listen to Sturgeon talk - most of the rhetoric is viciously anti-Tory and it resonates. Let's have some perspective here.

The seventies was a car crash under the Heath, Wilson and Callaghan administrations. Under Heath we had blackouts and a three-day week and the Labour governments which followed continued the mismanagement culminating in something even worse. I'm no apologist for Heath, Wilson or Callaghan. It's called balance rather than flying off the handle with silly rants about benefit scroungers and a view of history that is as unbalanced and to be honest, as ignorant as anything I've heard.

I don't know where you are getting this fevered socialist idea in your head. Rich Bullingdon boys turning the UK into a sweatshop and creating a society where the majority of benefit claimants are working ( check the stats ), social mobilty going down the shitter and the creation of a new tricolour of orange in Scotland, red in the north of England and blue in the south isn't what I believe in. Just watching 詩論公論 on NHK. They showed the faces of the leaders of 4 main parties. Couldn't stop laughing when they showed a photo of Ed Miliband's brother as the leader of the Labour Party. I know all gaijins look the same, but can someone at NHK do a bit of research? I guess that's asking a lot.

I'm surprised by the result. I think Miliband blew it when he said he didn't think Labour overspent during their last year in government. Nobody could have any faith in his ability to manage the finances after he said that. He also wanted to make "islamophobia" a crime, i.e. criticism of islam would be outlawed. Anyone advocating such nonsense is not fit to govern.

Farage and UKIP were just the latest manifestation of the discontent of a substantial proportion of the British public with inadequately controlled immigration. If this issue remains unresolved, of course he or someone else will be back. For that not to happen would mean the entire British public had become apathetic, and while it would be understandable if it had, given the lack of willingness of successive administrations to do anything about it, I think too much of my fellow countrymen to believe that it will sink into obscurity. The polling in Scotland gives a clear indication of the British ability to get their backsides into gear IF they have the right motivation. Now let's see the whole country do it next time.
