The kind of triumphalism that makes people hate Canadians!

It's no wonder Central and South America are turning away from the North and embracing Chavez and Bolivarism.

Hey, don't blame Canada for your troubles.

If so, good... but no need to be so arrogant about it.

Why have people been hating Canada? Because they have the most diverse natural resources? The most fresh water in the world? The Montreal Canadians? Why Why Why?

Hate Canadians??? Americans are supposed to ignore Canada not hate it, actually noticing Canada and Canadians exist is un-American. At least it used to be, seems things have changed a bit down south.

-someone must be first. But wasn't Japan the first to declare that the failure of the U.S. financials would have a limited effect in Japan. -but that was before the 1,000s in layoffs.

=Canada is in trouble. Believe it. Feel sorry for those Canadians.

The Canadians are cool and intelligent people usually. That's why they voted in such a great leader as PM Steve Harper. They are really silently respected by many Americans. And in recent years they have shown up our Euro neighbors for their staunch participation in their commitment overseas. It's not smug of Mr. Harper to say Canada is holding its own in the face of this recession. It's reality. Most Canadians prove to be good realists ... except some of the ex-pat ones that live on JT.

A strong Canadian banking system has allowed financial institutions to continue lending to the maple syrup manufacturers that drive Canada's economy. But it's not moose and zambonis for Canada - a slump in the American economy means U.S. consumers are cutting back on non-essential purchases of salmon and maple syrup, negating the benefit of a weaker Canadian dollar.

The small population of Canada should help it get out of its troubles fairly quickly.

Canada could sell fresh water to Australia. They'd be a good customer and Canada's never-ending supply of the stuff would pull it right out of the economic slump. They must have some big ice-cubes to tow down under and sell for profit.

Welcome to Canada which has had a strong influence from socialism and social democracy via Saskatchewan and is a better place to live than the US and was smart enough not to get involved with sub-prime loans. Hate Canada all you want until you get sick and need socialized medicine or want a safe place for your money.

I agree. The crap usually hits the fan immediately after leaders make positive announcements. Eh, watch out Canada!

Too bad for Canada that Obama and his ilk have nothing but disdain for the traditional Anglo-Saxon values that Harper and most decent, hardworking Canadians still believe in.

rollonarte you don't get it. Arrogance is not a traditional Anglo-Saxon value. It's also un-Candadian.

Harper is an arrogant jerk. He inherited a fiscally reponsible government from the decade and a half under the liberal government, and now he's trying to take all the credit. Also un-Anglo-Saxon and un-Canadian.

He's probably right about Canada's fiscal viability, but if what he says is true, “Canada is receiving rare recognition these days in the United States and around the world for these strengths,” there's no need to actually say it. Very un-Canadian.

    How ironic is that?

sydenham your definition of un-Canadian must only be about yourself. Is it un-Canadian to hate Hockey too? I know a few that do. But they still support their country. Get off your high Canadian horse and admit that not all Canadians are the same.

    Good for Canada. < :-)

bushlover, just look at the irony of the statement:

“If there ever was a time to put away that legendary Canadian modesty it is now.”

It's Harper who says that modesty is a legendary Canadian thing. So he, in one sentence, both promotes Canadian modesty and smashes it to pieces. And why is he saying this stuf in the first place? To pump up Canada at the expense of other countries. This just proves his arrogance. He could have said the exact same thing in a far less chest-pumping manner, but he chose not to.

Get off your high Canadian horse and admit that not all Canadians are the same.

Ask any Canadian which they think is a more admirable trait, modesty or arrogance.

"Prime Minister Stephen Harper predicts Canada will emerge from the global financial crisis faster than any other country but said there won’t be a recovery until the U.S. financial system is repaired."

It kinda sounds like he has no faith in Obama and Geithner and company...
