What a true mess! I can not even imagine the horror, the fear that must have gone through those that survived this terrible accident, right before dinner?? Poor people, and I am sure not only 3 have died, anyway RIP and as for the idiot captain, rot in prison, since I guess the Italians do not have the death penalty there.

Quite; this is not a time for hysterical over-reaction, the black box will tell the story.
The Italians really should not play with big ships, they have never been very good at it.

Why are there so many pictures when there are actually only six?

What's really alarming is being unable to launch the lifeboats due to the initial slight list, let alone the final capsize. That sounds like a massive design/ building error, and I wonder how other cruise ships of similar design would fare - they all look like massive, unstable blocks of flats floating high on the water

Modern day Titanic, luckily it did not get worse

Today on the Chuo line, they said about 50 Japanese were also on this Italian ship and if my kanji level is as good I think it is, it seems all of the Japanese were able to escape alive.

I know I dont want to go on a cruise now. I hope they find all the missing people quickly. What an absolute nightmare.

wanderlust, The vast majority of ships launch lifeboats from winches in a similar way. If there is a large enough list, it simply becomes impossible to launch the boats. There was a guy on the BBC news saying that modern ships are apparently designed to reduce list by allowing water to lay in the ship evenly. If the water moves around though it can unbalance the ship.
The pictures show the gash in the ship is on the opposite side of the list so I supose the authorities will be looking at what the ship did to cause the incoming water to move around. Maybe this happened when the crew attempted to get the ship as close to land as possible?
Elbuda Mexicano, Without knowing what caused the ship to hit the reef in the first place, system failure or human error, its too early to crucify the captain. If he's tried to get the ship close to shore to avoid going down in deep water he may have saved hundreds of lives. Noone knows until the results of the investigation are in.

Pretty scary stuff! Let's hope the death toll doesn't increase. RIP to the deceased.

The thought about being trapped in a cabin in slowly sinking ship is just creepy. I hope they find them.

The Titanic hit an iceberg in the mid-Atlantic and sunk to a depth of two miles. This boat hit a reef just offshore of an island, and the captain steered the ship to almost walking distance of the harbour quay. Granted, when the vessel you're in begins to turn upright, concern is in order. To compare this to the Titanic, though, is like comparing Three Mile Island to Fukushima.

It looks like a metaphor for Europe.
