"Chinese President Xi Jinping said last month that any confrontation between the two powers “will surely spell disaster for both countries and for the world”.

Especially for China.

Especially for China.

Especially for Japan and Korea too. If US nuke hit the coastal town of east coast of PRC, radiation and nuclear ashes will fall as rain on the Japan and Korean residents. One US nuke war head can wipe out more than 200 millions of inhabitants of near by neighbours. For China, it is still the fraction of their population. For Japan and Korean, it is unaffordable and unthinkable loss of man power.

Although Japan and Korea are alliance of US, they may have to intercept and shoot down the incoming US missiles for saving their people not becoming tender steaks.

Burning BushAug. 01, 2014 - 06:46PM JST China and the US will never fight, otherwise Walmart would be empty. And how long could US society last without iPhones from China?

You think iphones can only be made in China? The only nations that "will never fight" are democratic ones, and those who follow the rule of international law and seek regional peace and stability. Not region hegemony and domination through military and territorial expansion. China most certainly needs to be contained by the entire world to keep it from starting WWIII.

The U.S. will not use nukes on China. Believe it or not, the U.S. military has the means to knock out both the Chinese military and the Russian military simultaneously without nukes.

"Which countries did China invade, I've forgotten?"

Tibet? And it wasn't to liberate it.

" America has invaded 22 countries in 20 years."

And enslaved all of them!

Is that what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan when it was invaded by America and Britain, Bush&Blair?

With each other genius.

Which countries did China invade, I've forgotten? Tibet, South Korea, India, Vietnam... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_the_People's_Republic_of_China

Sorry, but I don't. Alone, no way, with allies, yes.

How long did the World Wars last, Vietnam, now Afghanistan? That would be a long World War with so many allies on each side. Someones bound to push the button as all rules of war breakdown and humans go mad once again.

zichiAug. 01, 2014 - 11:45PM JST OssanAmerica The United States have invaded about 50 countries since the end of WWII, while China invaded about 6, but you also >made the claim "democratic nations will never fight". Is America not a democratic country then?

Have you forgotten English too? Do you understand what "WITH EACH OTHER" means?

Zichi,

Defense budget figures are irrelevant. Furthermore, China's budget is a gusstimate as it's the only one you listed that is kept secret. Perhaps you might have noticed the may calls for "transparency" by many countries? About the only way that anyone can actually question if China could start WWIII is by not reading any news over the last 10 years.

China has been working diligently as reports suggest to hack the computers. One would thing they could not cause mass chaos although US has been caught with our pants down on numerous occasions.

If they could shut down defense systems or even communications we'd be in trouble.

I've understood China to have this "capability" for quite a long while. Their "acknowledgement" means nothing to me as the US was under the same "intimidation" from Russia for decades during the first Cold War. This is not really unexpected unbelievable news. The US has always had the same capability for many decades so if not to the nth degree of China. MAD rules are still in effect.

For people who are worrying about American capability to respond on any aggressions on our homeland, China is still 10 years away from the US in terms of major weaponry. And for warmongers and ultra-nationalists, the US has no plan to start a war with either Russia or China in nuclear capacity, why? It’s because even if the US would win, that will be Pyrrhic victory, so in conclusion the US is not stupid and thus fight someone else’s wishing wars, stop dreaming on that part.

Peace through dialogs and give-and-take would be goal.

General Douglas MacArthur's infamous claim of dropping 50 nukes all over China after his defeat in Korean war 1951. His remarks were always like an alarm in China. If the US has ever done some good deeds to Chinese people instead if hegamonic threatening attitutes, those weapons were not necessary to be introduced.
