American Economy is weak not Obama, God gifted President of the USA. At the moment no country would like any conflict with China that too due to bad economy. Even Asia's No.1 (largest economy) Japan is quiet, anti-China bashing is on HOLD.

Correction: They want to find out whether Obama is weak.

The name "South China Sea" surely makes China think that the sea belongs to it indisputably, its "backyard" indeed. China has had quite many years to strenghthen its navy and its military base at Hainan and spratty islands. China must be feeling quite confident and comfortable about its power these days ,that is why it harrassed USS "Impeccable" just to prove a point and test president Obama at the same time...yeah enjoy your power while it lasts.

The United States is a Pacific power and will not yield strategic dominance in East Asia to a socialist dictatorship bent on expanding it's military might and polticial domination. The US will stand by all of it's Asian allies in this regard. Because we are America! (Play anthem here) Suggest you stand down.

I'll bet the GOP High Command are frantically planning an invasion of China at this very moment.
There's probably some chin-stroking GOP party hack right now saying, 'Yep, we know they've got the WMD. It's a slam dunk like Iraq was, yep!'
That would explain why there hasn't been a peep from the GOP about this issue.

Ahhh, China trying to become "Gian" from the Doraemon series regarding territories. His famous words, "What's mine is mine. What's yours is mine."
Either way, there are many countries that don't recognize what China thinks is theirs.

[about 120 kilometers off China’s southern island province of Hainan.] It sounds like in this incident that it is the US Navy in the wrong. That is not outside the international 200 mile limit to be in international waters. I'd say they are trying to pick up a signature on this new sub that is reported to be in the area so they can keep track of it. The jet and the spyplane were in international air space so that is a different matter.

The GOP isn't going to peep on this issue, it's up for the commander and chief to decide what to do. I do wonder if the 200 mile limit applies but I'm not sure. China claims all the way to the Spratly Islands, which is way beyond 200 miles, so I'm not sure who is wrong here. The Chinese do seem to try this with every new president. I doubt they are going to get anywhere though.

In terms of naval presence China would have trouble ordering me to move my rowboat let alone end navy surveillance. Although I must say, some of those chinese diesel ships may very well give me a run for my money.

There should be statements like the US is protecting their interest by using survalance. The US is doing the same thing that China does.
But instead there are those who immediately start bad mouthing Obama. I'm not amazed though. Typical. < :-)

I think China should follow it's own demands and stop spying on other nations. Wow could you imagine if that did happen, China would not have enough food to feed them all.
Hell China will next want all the territory once held by the Mongolian empire (Yuan empire).
China is traveling the same road that the old Soviet's traveled. They are in a build up of their forces that will only lead to one thing, bankruptcy.
This want to be super power will fall within the same time span as the Soviet's. Before 2020 this Chinese want to be super power will be no more.

This will blow over pretty soon.

What 200 mile limit? I'm sure you are confused here. Chinese territoriality extends 24 miles off the coast, not 200.

It is confusion over the definition of exclusive economic zone, which extends a maximum of 200 miles from the coast. The definition comes from UNCLOS, of which China is a signatory but the U.S. is not, further complicating the issue.
Travel by even military ships is permitted there. The question is about its purpose for being there, although even that is not clearly defined. Some would say it is permitted only if the purpose is innocent.
So then you have the question of: is electronic spying innocent? Naturally the party being spied on will always say "no". Note that it is not considered innocent for purposes of "innocent passage" when traveling in a country's territorial waters.
Here is an interesting opinion on the previous incident: http://www.mcgill.ca/maritimelaw/history/chinese/

Even in a EEZ, countries can only regulate for things like pollution and industry. Spying is not one of those things countries can legally prevent. In other words, for US purposes, it is considered international waters, and the US can do anything it wants there. Provided its not fishing, or dumping toxic waste. Sonar mapping does not fall into this catagory.

In the event that Molenir is correct then I'd say I have to agree. That is also why Australia does nothing about the Japanese Whaling Fleet. I guess The USA does have a right to be there and the Chinese overstepped their limit. Funny how things work out.
