They first said they would use the Islands for tourism. Now the truth comes out so what are the powers to be going to do about it...This could be the start of something big..I hope not..

I guess Obama just got sand kicked in his face!- Again! The World Court as well as theU.N. are merely paper tigers in the eyes of RED China & the lust for power within.

This island looks to be a bit closer to China (Hainan) than Vietnam.

Let's stop buying China made products, so they can not fund their military with that money!

"The constructions on relevant islands by China are mainly to provide more public service to the international community as well as to facilitate rescue, fishery and medical operations." Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It is impossible to understand what public service the international community receives from anti-air missiles.

If they are not already there, China will put anti-ship missiles there... for the public good of the international community of course.

Said it before say it again, the west has HELPED create the monster that is China, by encouraging so many students they got educated & nicked technical know how. The west invested in China which upped its standards of living greatly, & at the same time China has demanded & GOT/GETS lots of technology in order to get market access................

If China keeps this up we may have to suck it up & put the monster out of our collective misery, but it will be ugly & cause a lot of misery.

Guess we all will kind of reap what we have sown & all so the rich could take us & our countries to the cleaners............

That's what China does. They push and push and coerce. PRC elite doesn't care about their people or the rest of the world. They are just fixated with abstract concepts such as nation, power, and glory. A good lesson for everyone. China must be stopped.

You have to admire China's graduated brinksmanship. Very canny.

"In a joint statement, Obama and the 10 ASEAN leaders demanded the “peaceful resolution” of a myriad of competing territorial claims over islands, atolls and reefs."

I doubted, if US invited any ASEAN members, not even Vietnam, for the purpose of raising any questions on China, I don't think any leader will go except Phillipines', this is a big issue, no lies.

Chinese missile crisis?

". . . hoping that China will want to avoid being painted as a regional bully."

Judging by China's behavior (past & present), it doesn't look as though China gives a flying you-know-what about what anybody thinks.

I just blew my beer reading this;

PRC Foreign Minister denies that PRC had placed missiles on disputed South China Sea island saying that it is a complete fabrication made up by western media. ROFL

It's pretty interesting stuff this. China is essentially a very isolated country. Most of it's neighbors are not allies in any form. Japan, Korea, Russia, Taiwan, Vietnam, The Philippines, India all have uneasy relationships with China. Extend that further to countries like the US, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia etc and you have a pretty isolated and unsupported nation. So they need to be very, very powerful to go it alone - and the truth is they aren't. Certainly not yet.

And yet they keep pushing the envelope anyway.

You've got to think that this is really only leading down the path of conflict, because the other countries in the region simply can't afford to allow them to do whatever they want for a sustained period of time.

Fascinating times.

Aggressive act of provocation from Beijing. The deployment on Woody Island of two HQ-9 batteries of eight missile launchers and associated radar systems, medium to long range with active radar-homing capability.

This is a significant escalation and has to weighted up with the threat to freedom of navigation of vital trading routes. A cynical act from the Government of China, timed to coincide with the Association of South-East Asian Nations leaders’ meeting in California, hosted by Barack Obama.

This demands a strong response, the Government of China in a threatening act of intimidation to bully, browbeat and coerce neighbors. There is only one way to deal with this type of behavior. We are well past the naughty step.

I have to disagree. With our markets so tied up in theirs, both through manufacturing, and now as consumers, they basically have us by the short and curlies. We can't afford to cut ties with them, because the loss of manufacturing and purchasing would collapse economies.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

The scary part about those missiles is that they can't really distinguish between commercial airliners with Military patrol planes since they basically share the same design so if PLAN hits the button irrationally then hundreds of innocent lives could be lost instantaneously and the region is heavily used for commercial air traffic.

If Abe san LDP Government ever needed an reason or excuse to turn public opinion towards abandoning 70 years of pacifism enshrined in a constitution unique to Japan, then the foolish Government of China have just gifted it on a plate.

Strangerland,

I have to disagree. With our markets so tied up in theirs, both through manufacturing, and now as consumers, they basically have us by the short and curlies. We can't afford to cut ties with them, because the loss of manufacturing and purchasing would collapse economies.

That works both ways. While China's GDP may be huge, it is still dwarfed by the combined GDPs of the US and EU. They can also not afford to cut ties with us, as theirs would be one of the economies to collapse. And if that happens, China will struggle to keep the lid on Tibet, Xinjiang, Taiwan, the SCS, and perhaps even its own Han majority. I think they know this and wouldn't chance it.

If air defense there is OK, then should be no obstruction for South Korea to deploy THAAD system for their own air defense:

LOL that island can easily become a sand pile!

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

LIARS! I knew it! I knew COMMUNIST China was going to use the islands in an ALL OUT EFFORT To Communize The Pacific Region.

It needs to HALT IMMEDIATELY & U.S. Navy Warships need to start intercepting all Military and Commercial Traffic going to these Islands.

China had lied about their intentions on these islands and Sanctions need to be considered on China as punishment if these islands are not stripped and abandon without delay before a "Miscalculation" occurs and human life is lost.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

turbotsat: This island looks to be a bit closer to China (Hainan) than Vietnam.

But the island the US sailed by last month, in the same chain, is closer to Vietnam. So VN have got a point, too.

Triring: ... hundreds of innocent lives could be lost instantaneously and the region is heavily used for commercial air traffic.

It's probably all traffic to/from China or Vietnam. China probably does care, somewhat.

This may be a pilot project for later missile installations off the Philippines, in the Spratlys.

This must not stand.

It's as if China's government are begging us to bomb them back to the stone age. If they keep provoking, militarizing and destabilising the peace in the area, then sooner or later they're going to trigger a hostile response. China is in no position for such a battle, surrounded by victims of its bullying, with only North Korea liable to lend any kind of support.

Does the Chinese government see themselves as being like the Spartans? A kind of "if you back us into the corner, we'll beat you down and break through" kind of deal? If so, they're sorely mistaken. They are more like the Persians than the Spartans. It didn't end well for Xerxes, and it won't end well for China either. They seriously need to stop this behaviour immediately before they end up getting their own people, innocent people killed. All because of the government's greed and power lust.

I'm not claiming that this information is false but to take "Fox News" reports as fact is very odd, they have consistently been proven to be the worst fact based "News" organization of all networks. Secondly, why haven't any other countries military satalites confirmed this and shown the pictures to the public?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

It's probably all traffic to/from China or Vietnam. China probably does care, somewhat

As well to and from Japan/Korea to Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, some parts of India, etc.

Like I said the region is full with air traffic.

I agree - it's a Mexican standoff. That's what gives them power. They know they can't live without us, but we also can't live without them.

I knew COMMUNIST China was going to use the islands

China is not communist.

It's as if China's government are begging us to bomb them back to the stone age. If they keep provoking, militarizing and destabilising the peace in the area, then sooner or later they're going to trigger a hostile response.

Won't happen - see my comments above. Bombing China would be cutting off the nose to spite the face, and would hurt the country/countries bombing as much as it would China.

This PART of the monster I was referring to above, seems I am not the only who see the danger China seems hell bent on pursuing........the commies must be REALLY scared of their domestic situation ramp things up like this to help make the locals forget about how bad things are getting INSIDE China!

Should be more afraid of countries that actually had shot down commercial airlines before, e.g. US & Russia.
