This island looks to be a bit closer to China (Hainan) than Vietnam.

Said it before say it again, the west has HELPED create the monster that is China, by encouraging so many students they got educated & nicked technical know how. The west invested in China which upped its standards of living greatly, & at the same time China has demanded & GOT/GETS lots of technology in order to get market access................

If China keeps this up we may have to suck it up & put the monster out of our collective misery, but it will be ugly & cause a lot of misery.

That's what China does. They push and push and coerce. PRC elite doesn't care about their people or the rest of the world. They are just fixated with abstract concepts such as nation, power, and glory. A good lesson for everyone. China must be stopped.

It's pretty interesting stuff this. China is essentially a very isolated country. Most of it's neighbors are not allies in any form. Japan, Korea, Russia, Taiwan, Vietnam, The Philippines, India all have uneasy relationships with China. Extend that further to countries like the US, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia etc and you have a pretty isolated and unsupported nation. So they need to be very, very powerful to go it alone - and the truth is they aren't. Certainly not yet.

And yet they keep pushing the envelope anyway.

You've got to think that this is really only leading down the path of conflict, because the other countries in the region simply can't afford to allow them to do whatever they want for a sustained period of time.

I have to disagree. With our markets so tied up in theirs, both through manufacturing, and now as consumers, they basically have us by the short and curlies. We can't afford to cut ties with them, because the loss of manufacturing and purchasing would collapse economies.

The scary part about those missiles is that they can't really distinguish between commercial airliners with Military patrol planes since they basically share the same design so if PLAN hits the button irrationally then hundreds of innocent lives could be lost instantaneously and the region is heavily used for commercial air traffic.

If Abe san LDP Government ever needed an reason or excuse to turn public opinion towards abandoning 70 years of pacifism enshrined in a constitution unique to Japan, then the foolish Government of China have just gifted it on a plate.

That works both ways. While China's GDP may be huge, it is still dwarfed by the combined GDPs of the US and EU. They can also not afford to cut ties with us, as theirs would be one of the economies to collapse. And if that happens, China will struggle to keep the lid on Tibet, Xinjiang, Taiwan, the SCS, and perhaps even its own Han majority. I think they know this and wouldn't chance it.

If air defense there is OK, then should be no obstruction for South Korea to deploy THAAD system for their own air defense:

LIARS! I knew it! I knew COMMUNIST China was going to use the islands in an ALL OUT EFFORT To Communize The Pacific Region.

It needs to HALT IMMEDIATELY & U.S. Navy Warships need to start intercepting all Military and Commercial Traffic going to these Islands.

China had lied about their intentions on these islands and Sanctions need to be considered on China as punishment if these islands are not stripped and abandon without delay before a "Miscalculation" occurs and human life is lost.

It's as if China's government are begging us to bomb them back to the stone age. If they keep provoking, militarizing and destabilising the peace in the area, then sooner or later they're going to trigger a hostile response. China is in no position for such a battle, surrounded by victims of its bullying, with only North Korea liable to lend any kind of support.

Does the Chinese government see themselves as being like the Spartans? A kind of "if you back us into the corner, we'll beat you down and break through" kind of deal? If so, they're sorely mistaken. They are more like the Persians than the Spartans. It didn't end well for Xerxes, and it won't end well for China either.
