With satellite technology, aircraft carriers are becoming as obsolete today as battleships were in 1941. Drones will rule the battlefields (and oceans) of the future. And submarines as well (for the oceans).

Virtuoso, exactly what I was thinking. Also, even an aircraft carrier cannot operate long without shore support; where do they expect to get that? They have bought in effect a floating airport that will not be able to travel far from their ground-based airports.

I just looked at a photo of this ship and it doesn't appear to have catapults, just the sloped deck. That really limits the type of aircraft and payload of each one, but still it's a huge step for a country who is trying to downplay their military build-up.

So l guess the Chinese chose to ignore the conditions they agreed to when they brought this carrier. It was sold to the on the condition it wouldnt be refitted for combat operations. Like the Chinese ever stick to agreements though

Probably the Japanese government was very very jealous of something they were 'forbidden' to do ! Pity very pity.

I want to show my greatest gratitutes to the Turkish government who really really honour the promise to let go the ship passing through 'Bosporus strait' in 1999 after taking China's friendship money! They are really a good friend. As a NATO country helping a communist state regardless of US concerns, that was the most honourable thing!

@Spidapig.......Oh come on, gives me a break! Are you telling China to honour that agreement to use the ship as a 'casino'? China is no 'iraq' and there will be no 'consequences by force' if teared it anyway, a paper is a paper! Even Robert Gates shall never raising such questions in Beijiang!

Really China had no intention of ever not using this ship for its intended purpose. If you look at the history of Chinese aircraft carrier development you can trace it back to the 80's when they brought the Australian carrier for scrapping and then held onto it for years to study the design. It is believed they even went as far as to remove and rebuild the deck for training purposes. This latest development is just a culmination of years of research (stealing information) and trials. And its just something that the world is going to have to get used to, the good news though is that the carrier is only of limited use. It can only carry a small number of aircraft.

As it comes out of port, NK can threaten to sink it with their semi-submersibles, and get some nice fat considerations in return...
