so so sad

It obvious from its attitude toward drugs and religion that China still hasn't recovered from the Opium Wars of the 1840s and the Taiping Rebellion of the 1850s.

Repression or democracy? The article implies it's the former, but I wonder. I can believe that a lot of people get creeped out by the prominence of religious symbols that they see as representing some kind of non-standard, superstitious "magic". In parts of the USA or Europe, if there was suddenly a wave of pentagrams or inverted crosses appearing on otherwise public buildings such as hospitals and schools, I think the locals would be putting pressure on the authorities to get rid of them somehow. Perhaps not under any anti-religious laws, but using planning regulations or some other "rectification" of illegal structures.

I seem to have undergone a conversion after being presented with a bottle of Jura Superstition whisky for Christmas, which features an ankh symbol as its logo. I can understand that people might think I've been bewitched.

They are lucky that there is virtually no chance of any retaliation towards all those little Chinatowns around the world, full of Buddhist temples where the locals allow them to worship...

I don't understand the Chinese government's problems with non-violent religion.

Your logic is flawed. The presence of a religious symbol cannot make a structure illegal in the U.S. The only control authorities have over religious symbols is if the symbols are on public land through the concept of "separation of Church and State" (Federal, State, and local governments cannot be seen as promoting one religion over others). If the symbol - even a pentagram or inverted cross - is on private property, then the symbol is protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution.

China fails in regards to this because first of all, there really isn't any private property in China and second of all, the concept of a Bill of Rights or Freedom of Religion is so alien to Communist regimes that even talking about such a thing would probably get you whisked off to a gulag, never to be seen again.

We're speaking of Christianity here. Hardly non-violent.

Gets in the way of the violent regime.

@albaleo

This is just the latest in a series of insults to the freedom of the Chinese people. I don't like most religions, either, but people should be free to do what they please if it is non-violent.

Unfortunately in China party officials don't like the obvious symbol of Christianity in plain sight, but churches are important for outreach to the broader community in which they can play an important social function. As such, they should be respected by local authorities and not desecrated in such a grievous manner. Americans should be grateful for the wisdom and foresight of their founder's vision of religious freedom and for the gift of faith and liberty.

"but people should be free to do what they please if it is non-violent"

My comment wasn't based on my own views on freedom, but on what I see around me. I think if someone erected a pornographic image on public view anywhere in the world, there would be public outrage. I have some superstitious relatives (in-laws) who I know would be creeped out if there was a large cross or other religious symbol (except they ones they worship) on view where they lived. I'm not saying this is right, just that it happens. Which is why I wondered whether it was an act of repression or an outcome of public opinion which we might describe as democracy.

Christianity is being attacted the world over but seldom reported in the west The Liberal media in the U.S. closed it's eyes to this long ago. As for the Red Chinese Communist s They are Rabid Dogs& I will pray for them at their Funeral!

When will folks get it, Communism is a state religion and no other gods can stand in the way of their deities, you know Mao, Marx, Lenny, Stalin, Carl Dix, Groucho (love puns) and the Kim's. The Liberal media will stand idly by smiling and not saying a word. But, god forbid if an illegal immigrant gets deported or if a dangerous criminal is killed by the police, the Liberal media will cry a river and roll around on the ground like the end was near.

The name of the game these days with the media is.......HYPOCRISY!

Well said!

I have read many reports and news stories of Christians being arrested, persecuted and even murdered by certain religious fanatics (that can't be named because the PC police will censor this post), but the mainstream Liberal press refuses to even speak of it. But, if an unmanned drones kills a terrorist leader and some of his family member the Liberal media starts scream and crying tears.

This story will hit page 16 of the Sunday news and quietly disappear within a week. Hell, I wouldn't put it passed the Liberals to try and justify what these Communist thugs are doing.

The days of the Edward R. Murrow's and Walter Cronkite's. What we have today is PC censorship and corporate greed hampering real journalism. Hope that someday someone will stand up and have the bells to say it like it is........Oh wait, there is one, Rush Limbaugh!

The hypocrisy of the Liberal media amazes me and many other voters throughout the Western world. Whenever we vote their heroes out of office the Liberal media loses their lunch.
