WW-3 in the making. The show has begun.

It began with America's 'Pivot to Asia'

Am I the only one that is hoping that a super typhoon goes through and beats these islands down?

Also, if you look at where these islands are located, you've got to wonder how China thinks they have any claims to that region.

They don't have claim iamme, they arrogantly destroyed the the existing reef to develope a strategic outpost in the South China Sea.

No consideration for the environment at all just cover some reefs up and build a landing strip..This is so typical China....don't care about what anyone thinks says just do as they please...Not to mention they are not even near mainland China..

Climate change will put paid to these "islands"; in the next 20-30 years they`ll be underwater.

"Three seriously ill workers"...? Why would three workers be seriously ill at the same time?

@ glasshouseApr. 18, 2016 - 07:16PM JST 'No consideration for the environment at all just cover some reefs up and build a landing strip..This is so typical China....don't care about what anyone thinks says just do as they please...Not to mention they are not even near mainland China..' Unfortunately, large powerful countries make the rules to suit themselves. China's actions pale into insignificance when you consider Britain's forcible removal of the Chagosians from their islands, so that the US could build their base on Diego Garcia. Diego Garcia is considerably farther away from either Britain or the USA than China is to their new 'Island'.

More than $5 trillion of world trade is shipped through the South China Sea every year. Besides China’s territorial claims in the area, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Taiwan have rival claims........

Confront the Government of China....

A serious comprehensive policy involving planed and coordinated sanctions must be imposed and targeted to bring about maximum economic damage. The expressed and demonstrative purpose is to avert a full military conflict.

Economic sanctions must include trade sanctions, including punitive restrictions on imports, exports, investment and restrictions on capital flow.

Institute undetermined 'smart' sanctions, freezing all offshore funds and assets of members of the Government of China ruling elite. Identify companies essential within the economy then influence and destabilize these companies through coercion. There is a quantifiable and effective modelling device that can maximize the 'welfare' effect of targeted of multilateral economic sanctions.

Also influence countries, states and regions that are exporters/importers of essential commodities and services to China, so that a supply and demand 'wave effect' of sanctions actually benefit those nations.

Time to take the Gloves off.

@ itsonlyrocknrollApr. 18, 2016 - 11:35PM JST You must be joking! With Saudi Arabia threatening to withdraw $750b from the US if they pass a 9/11 bill, how can they even tempt China withdrawing it's massive stake in the US? Don't you know the 'Almighty Dollar' is a Fiat currency? That the 'Federal Reserve was the biggest scam ever perpetrated on the US, if not the world?

One good Daisy Cutter will put all this to rest.

In this case Paul_Barbara the Government of China intentions are neither amusing or comic.

There are just two options military or economic.

Appeasement will only result in the former. Sorry, had the opportunity been taken when dredging started a catastrophe could have been averted. Now it a question of whether a global crisis leading to devastating war can be salvaged diplomatically?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Told ya so. It was quite obvious from the moment the illegal Chinese construction began that it would get to this. I hope Japan puts a presence of the Senkakus soon, otherwise we will wake up one day to find a Chinese landing party.

Good thing the US got Hawaii and Guam....

@Paul_Barbara yes unfortunately large powerful countries do as they please.Covering up a reef in the Ocean and building a landing strip vs taking people off a Island that was already there seem to be a bit different to me especially when that happened in the 60s its not even logical to make that comparison. So what ever China does now you can compare with something that happened 50 odd years ago and deem it righteous. If your going to go to the trouble of copy and pasting comments at least do a good job of it.

Oh no, the sky has fallen. What’s all the fuss about a Chinese jet landing on an airstrip that China has built? Let it go people, as far as military is concerned I do believe China is a lot more peaceful than those major powers who have military forces all over the globe. Think about it, almost every day we would hear about terrorist attacks and bombing here and there but believe this China has nothing to do with any of them. China is the only major power that is least likely to engage in a war outside its own territories. So, smart up.

This man-made island is technically outside its own territories. And all signs point to they would be willing to go to war for it.
