The Chile quake was hundreds of times more destructive than the one which devastated Haiti, and while hundreds died in Chile, in Haiti the number is over 200 000. The difference? - - much of it must be chalked up to simple freedom of choice, the liberating effects that market reform brought to Chile, and competition, which brought higher building standards and safer housing.

Naomi Klein, as most sensible people have known all along, was wrong. Milton Friedman was right. We will never know the number of lives impacted - and for the better - when Chile decided to take the advice of Friedman and the U of Chicago economists, but it must be counted in the millions.

Odogma: what are you talking about? Chile is known for having major quakes in a relative short periods while Haiti had nothing important for 400 years. Chile has tight construction rules while Haiti can't afford them. Your post is nonsense...

    Chile has tight construction rules...

Even getting the codes on the books was an achievement.Putting in place the means to actually enforce them also speaks to the soundness of Friedman's vision.

    ...while Haiti can't afford them.

If Chile can cast off the maleficient Spanish / leftist-European model by adapting Friedman's policies maybe Haiti should look into doing the same - - whatever it takes to recover from the pernicious French / Canadian system that has proven to be so harmful to them.

Canada has a history of troubling intervention in Haiti, probably at the behest of their French allies. Try a search of 'The Ottawa Initiative.'

Neat, I just did and it says Canada was the host but the conference was attended by many countries...in the Americas and not surprisingly France...

Wait and the US was at this conference...I don't think Canada usually leads multi-nation political conferences that are attended by the US...

I guess I was thrown off by the presence of 'Ottawa' in the title of the initiative and by the fact that the conference - - on Haiti's fate, but with no Haitians present - - was held in some city called Montreal.

Yeah, in the same way the Swiss actually led and determined the actions at the Davos WEF. I'm sure the US, china, japan and the EU didn't actually make all the decisions.

The 3 countries that determine what goes in Haiti most are France, DR, and the US.,,,

You are trying to prove something with not related arguments.

In Chile the quake hit 65 km from Concepcion a city of 220,000 hab.. In Haiti the quake was in Port Au Prince of 710,000 hab. In Chile the contruction is a-sismic. Friedman only relaxed the control over the construction in Chile and is guilty of more detruction and death.
