Why are we calling Burma "Myanmar"? We don't call Germany "Deutchland" in English, or call Japan "Nihon".

DS, I think because they had a REVOLUTION and THEY changed the name from Burma to Myanmar right?? Why keep calling a country by an old name? So your examples are not correct, sorry.

"Aid groups have reported atrocities that occurred as recently as last month: A village leader was killed, allegedly by soldiers, for helping a rebel group, his eyes gouged out and his 9-year-old son buried beside him in a shallow grave. The boy’s tongue was cut out"
OUCH!! What a nasty, and mean thing to do to a little boy! Bastards!

Not many countries in the world could do what the U.S. is doing and carry weight: go into a nation and call for change to an open society. Not Russia, not China, not India, etc. That's why U.S. foreign policy is significant.

EM: "They" didnt have a revolution. It was a military coup that resulted in a brutal murderous dictatorship responsible for untold crimes. Pardon me if I dont respect what they do or say.
Ditto for Taiwan and the farce of calling it "Chinese Taipei" in various international events.

I have been to Burma. Fascinating country and great people. If and when they eventually get rid of their crazy junta, it could be a wonderful place to live.
