This may sound stupid but, isn't there laws requiring companies to disclose ingredients to consumers? If one of the "secret" spices was ground up peanut and a customer died from apocalyptic shock KFC would get sued out of business for not disclosing the ingredients. If there isn't such a law, there should be.

peanut? don't worry ,it is not a spice like pepper, cinamon, star anise, coriander, garlic or ginger...

That was not a specific example, much like your claim that garlic is a spice; it is a vegetable. However, some people are allergic to garlic and people with asthma may have a severe attack induced by ingesting garlic. There is virtually no food, herbs and spices included that does not induce an allergic reaction in some people. I do not believe the FDA would allow any company to sell food with "secret ingredients" or else the Chinese baby food producers could claim melamine as a secret ingredient. The "secret recipe" is PR B.S.

I'm with proxy -- it's simply a sales gimmick, that works. There's nothing in there that couldn't be analyzed, and as said if it were something secret that people had an allergy to, you'd be hearing about deaths somewhere, or you'd be hearing KFC say, "We're not telling you the secret recipe, but ahem, if you're allergic to this and that substance, please don't eat it.

It’s like an onion of security
Aha!! Is that a hint?
the heritage value is just as high for this secret recipe as the stories around the Coke formula
In other words it's worthless to people who aren't interested in filling their bodies with junk?
I always thought of garlic as a herb.

Agreed. Now we get to debate about how this crap makes it to a so-called news site in this form.

Oh, one more thing. The Colonel's recipie might actually be secret. But that would mean that what we are eating is not the same thing. Still works out to PR BS, and questions over how that makes it to the media.

I just enjoy my food, and only bother to classify it as either 1) yummy or 2) not yummy.

"I just enjoy my food, and only bother to classify it as either 1) yummy or 2) not yummy."
Damn... if only I could turn off my brain like that (I don't mean that in a bad way!), stop analyzing, and just enjoy (or not) the tastes.

The chicken at KFC isn't all that great anyway but it is a good marketing ploy.
Of course when the Colonel was walking the planet the FDA didn't much care if you didn't list your ingredients. There are plenty of products that just list "spices" without breaking them down. Garlic seems to be listed as do other stuff that is known to cause allergic reactions. Beyond that I don't know.

The chicken in the days of Col Sander might be very much different to chicken of today which is fully loaded with growth hormone and lots of fat. Some experts suspect that eating too much chiken now a day can contribute to breast cancer in women. Our family don't go to KFC often like before anymore, there are plenty and plenty of great cuisines around.

I've eaten at KFC before and the recipe hardly warrants this level of security.

If you are allergic to KFC then don't eat it. Simple.

Allium sativum L., commonly known as garlic, is a species in the onion family Alliaceae. Its close relatives include the onion, shallot, leek, and chive.

You could just order a bunch of lab tests to identify the 11 herbs and spices.

Not only that, but the hormones in both beef and chicken in general are said to be one of the possible causes in the early onset of menstruation in young women compared to a few decades ago, and a rise in cases of breast tissue in men (by that I mean noticeable). Read all about it some time ago during the whole bovine growth hormone ordeal. I decided soy products are best where possible, but I enjoy the odd bit of KFC once in a blue moon, or a nice rack of ribs if there's a restaurant that has them (rare here).

Whether the recipe is a secret or just PR BS, the colonel's chicken is pretty good but I prefer Popeyes chicken flavor. The interesting thing about Popeyes is that if you look at the demographics of their locations, they are located in neighborhoods that have a high percentage of afro-americans.

I like KFC in many countries around the world but not here in Japan. The taste is very monotonous and boring here in Japan. Then there is only one kind of sauce and that is "tomato ketchup" and you still have to beg for it. Perhaps the secret recipes in English were not handed-over to Japan because of language barrier that is why the management of KFC let Japan branch do their own version.
I had been to Singapore, Malaysia and other SE Asian countries. I like the extra flavor that adapt to the taste of each of these SE Asian countries.
