If this was truly about refugees seeking refuge from the wars, they would have stopped in Turkey. Or Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Greece, and all the many other countries that are NOT at war, and are perfectly safe.

The fact that they are all so very set on getting to Germany and Scandinavia says this is more about finding a country that will take care of them and offer them all kinds of social safety nets and benefits that they have never paid a dime into the system for.

If you insist on coming far into Europe, when you could have easily stopped many other non-war-torn countries along the way, fine. Charge them, for the expected amount of taxes they would have paid in to these nations for the support of these generous programs.

Otherwise, why wouldn't they insist? They've paid nothing in, they can claim its about fleeing war, and they'll end up getting generous benefits for free, paid for by everyone else.

These do not surpirse me cause it is just normal for people to seek a better lives for them and their children. I blame the German and other governments who decided to accept them. Luring them to go on these dangerous jounrey which not only endanger themselves but also cause massive problems to various countires they cross.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

@CrazyJoe

Except they did stop in Turkey (1.9 million), but there are more fleeing Syria, so off they go to find another place worthy of their lives. The refugees by their actions are informing Europeans that much of Europe is not a place worth calling home unless you are free from fear, discrimination, and tyranny. Had Hungary had a different approach they may not be inundated.

As long as people do not respect other people they will keep walking

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

Although I have sympathy for their predicament, many of these refugees have made a complete mockery of the UN convention by moving through multiple safe countries, disregarding the asylum laws in those countries and now criminally assaulting the police. Not only have they lost much of the goodwill that existed but I think they have actually pushed the UN refugee convention to destruction. Refugee is now a completely toxic word and each country closing its own national borders. International cooperation on this issue is now dead.

There is so much reporting about how Europe is being "overwhelmed" by floods of migrants. Two things to keep in mind. One, countries where the refugees and migrants come from are being "overwhelmed" by weapons from the US, European countries, Russia, China, etc. Two, Europeans used to be the migrants who "overwhelmed" other lands and the people who lived there.

-2 ( +7 / -9 )

One, countries where the refugees and migrants come from are being "overwhelmed" by weapons from the US, European countries, Russia, China, etc.

When there is demand, comes supply. If the people in those countires do not resort to violence to solve their problems in the first place I do not think the crisis will be this big.

Two, Europeans used to be the migrants who "overwhelmed" other lands and the people who lived there.

That was in the past. So according to your logic any countires can invade Japan cause Japan used to be the invader, right?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Two, Europeans used to be the migrants who "overwhelmed" other lands and the people who lived there.

And made those places much better as a result. The U.S, Canada, New Zealand ect would not be the countries they are today without European immigrants. The indigenous peoples of those regions would have never built the technologically advanced societies they are today. Where as the refugees here have no chance of building a better society.

5 ( +9 / -4 )

This is not immigration, not migration either, it is entering countries with no visa, job waiting and claiming that they are in fear for their lives which is true but they sure are heading for those countries with the best benefits in mass.

Germany and Sweden should have to pay the other countries for the problems their open door policy has caused now and for the next generation or two.

Why is Germany so vocal about being such a humanitarian country? Is there still a lot of self imposed guilt about what they did to Europe twice in the last century?

Before telling millions of people to "come on in", they, meaning all of European countries that created this mess, should have created quotas, rules/laws and a system instead of opening up the flood gates and cutting off the handle to close that floodgate off.

Watch the next election in Germany and Herr Merkel will be out of office and maybe kicked out of Germany too

2 ( +7 / -5 )

@AiserX

The indigenous peoples of those regions would have never built the technologically advanced societies they are today.

Who knows. From what I've read, cultures throughout pre-1492 America (the continents) were in general far ahead of any place in Europe technologically. They may have lacked the wheel, but in so many other ways were ahead of the myriad European kingdoms.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Of course, why didn't they call a summit ages ago. that will fix everything. this disaster is yet another nail in the coffin of the EU.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

The invasion will not end until a fence is built around the borders of the EU, the invaders deported en masse and all people arriving in boats are returned to where they came from. Meetings and hand wringing will only hasten the demise of Europe.

If your really referring to the Americas then no. The most advanced in the America's before Columbus were the Aztecs whom were hardly even advanced at all. Notable inventions? none. They only left behind an inaccurate calendar and some pyramids of which were nothing more then sacrificial altars.

So the media telling us that ISIS is taking over entire towns/regions and that people are trying to escape their country from ISIS and the Assad Regime is wrong? I guess I need to stop watching CNN and subscribe to your newsletter or news website.

Lots of different narrative fallacies dependent on perspective. I agree to disagree.

Here is an example of what to expect from the people now intent on moving to Germany:

@Crazyjoe

They can't stop in Turkey. If they get refugee status, its only temporary.

Or Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Greece, and all the many other countries that are NOT at war, and are perfectly safe.

Safe, but for threat of expulsion. As far as I know, those countries are not taking refugees. Staying there would doom them to the life of an illegal alien; no money, no work, no home, eating out of garbage cans and no way to improve their lot.

The only way they have one single shot at being a productive resident of a foreign country is to go to Germany or Sweden. The only way their kids are going to have a shot of growing up to be a decent, valuable human being is to go to Germany or Sweden. The only their kids are even going to get medical care is by going to Germany or Sweden.

Just because they escaped a war zone does not mean they have lost the ability to think ahead a bit, even if you and your supporters don't possess that ability.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

Sigh, when are the bleeding hearts going to figure out that this is a cultural/societal invasion.

When the Hindu's came, they adapted and combined with Western ideals and benefited the indigenous culture, When the Buddhists came, they adapted and combined with Western ideals and benefited the indigenous culture. When Islam came, they expected to be adapted to, and refuse to merge with Western ideals and are not benefitting the indigenous culture. When there is little to no compatibility between two societies, chaos results. Especially when it comes down to Islamic culture moving in from an Islamic country. They'll expect the country their going to will adapt to how they want to live, not the other way around.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

@Peace Out

They can stay in Turkey/Lebanon as long as the civil war continues in Syria. Nobody is forcing them to choose between risking their life at sea or being forced back into Syria. You're either misinformed or lying.

Being a refugee does not entitle you to go to any country you please. You're supposed to stay in the first safe country you enter. Just because Eastern European countries are poorer than their Western counterparts does not invalidate the fact that they are safe countries. This is a UN convention. Why is every liberal eager to throw away international conventions when it benefits their moral positioning?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

what ever their problem in Their own country they have no god given right to illegally invade another country. If a japanese citizen comes here to Canada and stays beyond the visa date he will be deported so why should someone get different treatment just because he is a Muslim or from Syria. One third of this people are young able well dressed males, they should stay and fight for their freedom instead of going to foreign lands and live like a beggars. And in several cases they are already starting to cause the troubles and walk around the streets waving flags of IS (Daesh) If one in a hundred of this young man and women is pro Daesh there is enough of them to turn all of Europe into a slaughter house.

5 ( +7 / -2 )

The UN and western socialists a real still calling these migrants and invaders refugees. Refugees don't demand where they get to go and what they get to have. Invaders do that. Funny how these people can assume the right to overrun Europe and make demands but they won't do the same in their own countries. They are ultimately part of their own problem, they could evolve to a modern culture instead of living in 7th century religious cultures of violence and slavery.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

Crazy Joe at the top puts his finger on the meat of the matter: before this present mass movement to not just Europe, but the richest and more generous parts of Northern Europe, the refugees had already first fled Iraq and Syria war zones to the war-less (and Muslim) countries Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon. They were already free of war, and yet they turned their noses up at such paltry safety. Why?

I've yet to hear anyone claim that Turkey, say, is "a war zone" in the press, yet these same "journalists" steadfastly ignore the inconvenient truth that the migrants elected to pass on peaceful countries which would provide them immediate shelter and support...to pick and choose which country to which they will move (and demand economic support from the taxpayers.) Thus, they have become economic migrants seeking to maximize their chances for support by immigrating to richer countries far, far away from the closest options.

Here's the kicker-in spite of all the talk by wealthier Muslims for the need to support other Muslims (and criticism for Europe to boot), much closer countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman etc. have steadfastly REFUSED to accept ONE SINGE Syrian refugee. This in spite of the fact that the Saudis now have more than 300,000 permanent but empty tents constructed on their soil for the soul purpose of housing (only) Muslims who just finished visiting the country for the Haj.

Air conditioned tents with plumbing and kitchens included-enough room for more than 3 MILLION refugees without building a single new structure...and yet the "custodians of the Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina" (along with the Gulf States who now enjoy some of the highest per-capita GDP averages in the world!) abjectly refuse to allow even ONE migrant to enter as refugees! Thus, those tents shall remain empty throughout the winter, while the only help the Saudis have offered Europe is...funds for building 40 new mosques to "assist" the refugees while they acclimate to their new (temporary? permanent?) promised land!! Google for yourselves and see.

Meanwhile, the hand-wringing press only makes matters worse by characterizing each new European country to be overwhelmed and exhausted by refugees as "heartless and tragic." Hungary, Greece and Italy were first on the list, but now you can see how yesterday's praised Serbia and Croatia have suddenly become the next "heartless" countries to close their borders to the onslaught of unchecked foreigners seeking the best deal in the Eurozone for themselves and theirs. And all this criticism after what is surely to be merely the first wave-just wait until next Spring, when these migrants are rioting and radicalizing European society from within while the next wave of hundreds of thousands from without seek refugee status like the trailblazers who went before them...

"Europeans used to be the migrants who "overwhelmed" other lands and the people who lived there."

A false equivalency. How many ethnic British people are now living in Pakistan or India with passports of those countries? How many French communities are there in Laos? How many Dutchmen in Java?

Answer: nearly zero. That's because the people of those countries kicked all the Europeans out. Do the Europeans have that same option? Hardly.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

many of these EU countries were taking the moral high ground over Australias policy of boat turn backs and getting tough immigrants. Now seems there having a change of heart!? WOW that didnt take long did it.

Remember, though, only Muslims are permitted entry to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Their blatant discrimination is tolerated for some reason; perhaps, just perhaps, because of hydrocarbons. Saudi, Qatar and the UAE are currently friends of the US and EU in part because of the ever-shifting my enemy's enemy is my friend world of foreign relations, and with Iran across the water relationships will remain in flux. And with Russia a hydrocarbon competitor to the Gulf states, things can get even knottier. Remember, too, that the US Bush family are close friends with the Saudi ruling family, making relationships even more complex. Remember, the UAE has a defence treaty with the UK. The UK will aid them in case of problems. Who knows what will happen next, who'll be friend and who'll be foe. For now, though, the Gulf states are being given a free pass on refugees.

Except for the fact that only some of the Baltic countries have had a change of heart. Most other European countries are still accepting refugees, despite the divide that it has created on both political and societal level.

I live in one of the Western European countries and I don't mind taking on "refugees" but the problem needs to be solved at its core. Make Syria safe again and you can send them back to rebuild their own country.

While the European politicians fumble, a full-scale islamic invasion is under way.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has an airconditioned, fully infrastructured tent city near Meccah that can accommodate 3 Million people. But does any of these young, bearded men want to go there? No, they demand to be accomodated, housed, and fed by Germany and Sweden.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

A false equivalency. How many ethnic British people are now living in Pakistan or India with passports of those countries? How many French communities are there in Laos? How many Dutchmen in Java?

Those were occupations not migrations. I was referring to the mass migrations of Europeans to the Americas and Oceania.

@WilliB Uh, Saudi Arabia is not taking refugees. They only take family of Syrians already living in Arabia, and some other classes of people will narrowly defined parameters, and yes, some Syrans have gone. While Saudi Arabia's refugee count is officially zero, I suspect they have admitted more Syrians than Israel, whose official count is also zero.

But I have not heard anyone whine that Israel was not taking any refugees. Funny that. Israel is close and rich, but nothing seems to be expected of them.

I also have heard a lot about a threat of terrorism etc from refugees. But I guess that only applies to Europe and Israel in some people's minds. No excuses for those we (cough) "don't like", even though its well known that most Islamofascist terrorism is Middle Easterner upon Middle Easterner.

The double standards never cease to amaze. Really.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

well, this is an issue, a real issue. those migrations are lucky enough as europe was built on tolerance and not ignorance, on christian values and ethics. that is the fact, not something made up.

balancing between love and humanity and tolerance vs. ignorance and hatred is very difficult to define in this situation. malthusian idea of a population bomb also looks moot in this case as it did not include values that are compatible or incompatible or how to compensate values and traditions that cannot survive in their own environment. if they cannot survive in their own, how can they survive in other areas? by bringing the kind of things that cause them to move in the first place?

and because of the mass flow of population, it is possible that at some point there is pride in what they are doing. or there is no fear. and the silentness of their fellow muslim communities that are rich enough to host them (the saudis, etc) only shows that maybe there is really something missing in the community itself.

In the rush to accuse the refugees of wanting to live on welfare, it is being overlooked that Sweden and Germany are offering permanent resident status. And that is HUGE. Why would anyone want to be a refugee stuck in a tent city with no sanitation, electricity, jobs or shops when one could be a permanent resident, live like a human, and have the potential to work your way up?

Oh, I know. Its a lot more fun to stroke your xenophobia with tales of greed and laziness. Cause, you know, those lazy bums just keep walking thousands of miles!

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

@warispeace

"Those were occupations not migrations."

You called them "migrants." Check your post again.

"I was referring to the mass migrations of Europeans to the Americas and Oceania."

So you ARE saying past colonial occupations ARE equivalent to what the Muslims are now attempting in Europe. Duly noted.

FYI, the indigenous peoples back then did put up a fight against the newcomers, often bloody ones And if you want to stick to your absurd equivalency narrative, you would be advocating the Europeans do the same: fight back against the newcomers.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Israel is close and rich, but nothing seems to be expected of them.

What?! "The only democracy in the Middle East" isn't helping" Oh my Gaawd!

Wait... They are helping. Israeli weapons were found among some captured jihadists. No surprise there.

Double standards abound

" The UN human rights chief, Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein, denounced “callous, xenophobic and anti-Muslim views that appear to lie at the heart of current Hungarian government policy "

I am not surprised that Zait Raad al Hussein would say that. But the issues raised by the Hungarian president are still true.

I am curious though: Has anybody ever asked the "human rights chief", Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein, why no islamic country has signed the UN declaration of human rights? Check it out, the count is zero. They have signed the Cairo declaration instead, which puts Shariah law above all.
