"...Berlusconi did a lot..."
In fact , as was pointed out, most of what he did was self-serving, including using his media empire for his own purposes. He has a sort of celebrity cult worship among supporters.

Ebuda : Some have made the comparison between Berlusconi and imagining Rupurt Murdoch being elected as PM/President and still controlling his media interests at the same time. which Burlusconi shamelessly did.

Regardless, the socialists, communists and other "takers," "planners" and "social justice" types aren't getting back into power. In fact, the new austerity measures are going to make life a little more challenging for their supporters and their grasshopper lifestyles.

A few years back there were democratic elections in Italy and it was the people who elected him again - a bit contradictory. I will miss his jokes. Good luck Italy.

Italy is not the only country where voice is given to such feelings and beliefs. Many Americans, myself among them, feel the same about our current 'leader.'

Why did he keep getting back in then? I, as the majority here, am happy to see such an embarrassing representation of 'democracy in action' get gone, BUT... who voted him in? Who tolerated this idiot? This self-interested sleaze?

The man is 75 and looks 50. He is rich and powerful and been at the top in Italy for a long time. If someone yells buffoon, I have to think that person assumed old Silvio had goals in mind that he in fact didn't. Looks to me like he got everything he or just about anyone could ever want.
