The licenses to kill, seize land and oppress are at risk.
A UN membership and other international bodies for the Palestinians will bring a bigger responsibility on their part. Wake-up call?
BS... It threatens their "control" over the situation.

The Palestinians are not defying the US. The US is defying the Palestinians.

Why should theU.S. veto the Palastinians from becoming members of the U.N? The majority of other members would welcome them. I thought the U.S was supposed to be a democracy

Fatah is defying reality. That reality is Hamas.

Yep.
I can only imagine what those conversations must be like. "Please, please, please don't do this. Of course we will support you because we have no spine and we can fall back on the US veto and we want to look good in front of others, but please don't do this. Don't make our members vote to support you."

This could not come at a worse time for the American president. He has suddenly and 'unexpectedly' lost a significant amount of the Jewish vote in the US.The outcome this week of a very important vote to fill a seat in Congress vacated by the disgraced Anthony Wiener was a shocker. The vote took place in one of the most heaviily Jewish districts in New York, but was won by the Republican challenger. There is panic.James Carville admits it.

How did America negotiate with Britian for Independence? With musket and cannon. Israel is more like Britian and Palestine is more like colonial American than Israel is like Canada and Palestine Quebec.
Only if you think most American Jews vote the same RossBardJapan. The wealthy Jews already vote conservative. The middle class to poor Jews won't change stripes over this. In fact, they, like so many Israeli Jews, will be quite happy to see that Jews are no longer running Palestine like a prison camp or the Warsaw Ghetto. To a Jew with any integrity, little could be more repugnant or embarrassing. But integrity and conservatism don't mix. Integrity is often a bar to being wealthy don't you know.

SuperLib -- sorry, Nope, not Yep. Obama and Clinton have been abject failures at forcing Israel to engage in meaningful negotiations. In fact, just the opposite. Isreal has backed off agreements/concessions it made previously, and continues its construction of new settlements completely unabated. The Palestinians have no option but to outwardly defy the U.S. Unfortunately, Obama talked a great game, and made some passionate speeches. But has delievered nothing.

The PLO ambassador in Lebanon Abdullah Abdullah said in an interview Wednesday with Lebanon's Daily Star, in the event that the UN recognizes some form of Palestinian statehood at the UN, the new "State of Palestine" will still expect the UN to support the so-called Palestinian "refugees." This is true, he said, even for the "refugees" who live in Gaza and the West Bank. That is, the same UN that the Palestinians seek recognition of statehood from will be expected to provide relief to Palestinian "refugees" living inside of "Palestine." As he put it, "Even Palestinian refugees living in refugee camps inside the Palestinian state, they are still refugees. They will not be considered citizens." So if nothing will change on the ground, why do the US and the EU care what the Palestinians do at the UN next week with their automatic General Assembly majority?

Recognition without a standing peace agreement is pointless. This is going to make more problems and won't solve any. Even if they did become a recognized nation Hamas can't very well represent them so it would fall to some other person under the control of Hamas, turning the UN into even more of an ineffectual clown court than it already is.
Long shot, but who knows?
Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 3 to 1 in the district, which has not been represented by the GOP since 1923. Before this special election the odds of seeing any kind of 'conservative' in that spot would be about as likely as Texas electing Ingrid Newkirk as governor.
And if you look at the numbers the Jewish population in the U.S vote overwhelmingly for Democrats so I'm not sure where you're getting your facts from.
