Why do people always refer to Obama as black when he's half-white?
0
BoldWarVeteren
Altria-; People usually calling Obama black are the democrats who play the race card continually.
Republicans don`t care about race, just credentials. Democrat conventions are a joke, pretending to be patriots and doing the best for the country etc..

But my point is: what is your point? Have you nothing better to do than to seize upon someone's misspeaking? Biden is positively silver-tongued compared to many others.

Heh, the Dem Convention, the beginning of the end for The Republicans, the neocons, and all their anti-American supporters.
I hear the Republican convention has been downsized and moved from St Paul's to McCain's home.
The problem is he can't remember which one......

Race-obsessed 'liberals' are their own worst enemies:
DENVER — The chief of Illinois’ National Organization for Women chapter today called on Barack Obama’s “political godfather” to resign immediately from the Illinois state Senate for calling an African-American Hillary Clinton delegate an “Uncle Tom.”
“That was a pretty horrible comment,” said Illinois NOW president Bonnie Grabenhofer, also a Clinton delegate, who issued the demand for Senate President Emil Jones’ resignation.

The Democrats still have a chance to dump Obama and Biden, but I don't think they will. In fact, I'm counting on it!

undecidedbout08,
It may be true that liberals are their own worst enemies when it comes to race. On the other hand, they are the only ones who are really dealing with the problem. Count the Republican Congresspeople.
Anyway, what is the connection of this to the article? That we call Obama black? How does the comment of a state senator in Illinois impact on the Democratic convention?
Altria's question is a good one. Why do we refer to Obama as being black when he is half-white? That in itself is reflective of a centuries-old racism that is embedded in the language we speak.
0
undecidedbout08
Sezwho -
Obama often points out that he is black, and that he just knows his opponents are going to tell you he is black, and that he has a funny name. Obama like to talk about how his father, who abandoned him, was from Kenya.
And he lies about himself:
“There was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Alabama, because some folks are willing to march across a bridge. So they got together and Barack Obama Jr. was born.”
Obama was born in 1961.
The Selma march took place in 1965.
His handler-spokesman, Bill Burton, later "clarified" for the little people: Obama was “speaking metaphorically."
In the end, he's just another politician. Frankly, I think his particular type of mythomania feeds off of stuff like this:

Barack Hussein Obama, needs all the people he can get to rally for him. But however many people praise and endorse him, all moderate, decent folk will vote for McCain.
Democrats have nothing to offer except bringing America to its knees with a 30`s style depression.

This should be an interesting convention. There all ready was a group of men (with White Supremist tattoos) arrested in Denver who said that they wanted kill Obama when he makes his acceptance speech. More to probably follow.
But, the Dems major problem is that they come across trying to be the party of the "working people" when new reports were that there was a shortage of limo's avaialble in Denver. They wanted the resturants to serve more "organic foods" and green meals. One hotel had to abandon the use of organic wooden keys to open the rooms and convert back to the plastic ones since there were too many problems with the wooden ones. All of these things may seem trivial, but to the averge joe American, whether in the midwest, west or south, when they hear things like that and then hear the Republicans say, let's make it better for the average guy to get ahead by making regulations better so that they can work to earn a living, or save and not get screwed out of their savings then people will leave the Dems. Yes the Dems have done good things in the past, and the Rep. have screwed things up too, by and far, they are both good and bad points for both parties.
But, I feel that I will have a better chance of prosperity under a Rep adminsistration.
In regards to why Obama goes by the term Black, yes he is half white, but in America no matter what they say, the outside on how you look counts. Walter White, the past president of the NACCP back in the 1940's was so fair that he could pass for white, but he identified as Black. Tiger woods can call him self Asian (Thai), but the bottom line, if he was a criminal, and they put out an APB on him, it would say "suspect Black male" on the loose.

Altria - "Half black, half white, all Democrat. Obama 2008" could be a good slogan for him.

I can't understand why you are concerned about the Democrats' patriotic credentials given the harm that Bush has done to your country's reputation and position in the world over the past 8 years. I'd say the definition of patriotism is voting against the GOP and its horrific record of failure.
Obama isn't perfect, but he may be the new start that your country needs. More of the same would be a disaster for Americans and for the world

Bilderberg666...You an count me as one "decent, moderate folk" who would NEVER vote for McCain. Respectfully, it is George W., and his Republican cohorts who have brought America to its knees, both domestically, but, most particularly, in foreign affairs. Russia just invaded Georgia with nary a whimper from Bush -- I guess he was too busy remembering what Putin's soul looked like. Iran is snubbing its nose at Bush's threats. And, the Iraqi's have gotten their timetable for troop withdrawl. Which is good, since the troops are desperately needed in Afganistan, which Bush forgot after he set his sites on Hussein. And all of these follies have helped push the price of oil up to astromomical levels, and put the U.S. trillions of dollars in debt. As a registered Independent, who has voted for both parties numerous times over the past few years, I believe the U.S. needs a change in direction -- desperately.
0
Bilderberg666
jerseyboy; Voting for war appeasers, who will cause the nation to sink into depression and embolden our enemies is unpatriotic.
Obama is not a patriot, he supports the liberal elite. They do not even love their own country. They would turn the US into a European style nation, where economic growth is unknown and internal strife is rife.
0
Alphaape
If Obama plans to do more things to America to gain the European's favor, then we all should read up on history. Let's look at Belgium, bastion of the "Euro" causes, and how under their guidance the Congo in Africa was decimated. A quick jaunt over to the Netherlands, and we can see what went on in Indonesia under the "Dutch East India Company." France fares no better than what was done to North Africa, and Indo-china. And let's not forget what was done to China by Britan, Germany and others.
So trying to curry favor with the Euro's and turn us into a Euro style nation would not be good. Obama needs to realize that and try to stick to more American values, that is independence and tolerance of different ideals and speech. Of course the US has had its hands in some of the dirty business in the world, but this attitude of trying to be more "Euro like" is not a good thing.
The demonstrations outside the events today by the far left of the Dem party who think that Obama has betrayed them will probably not sit well with the general election voters in the fall. The far left feels that Obama has abandoned them. The more main stream voters will feel that Obama will say anything to win. Most people expect that of a politican, but not one to swing so far on his positions to just get elected. I think that will hurt Obama in the fall.

Michelle, Old Ted, Stevie Wonder, yadda yadda.
It's once again the Clintons who are making the news at the convention.
How is Obama going to unite us all when he can't get his own party behind him?

I'm not sure how you get this idea that the USA is hated. Canada, Mexico, Germany, Denmark, Greece, Ukraine and France recently ELECTED pro-US leaders. Millions of people try to immigrate there every year. If you went to China or Africa and started handing out Green Cards, do you think they would be refused?

Obama lovers can only try and joke about a Bush slip of the tongue? Talk about desperation.
The democrats area laughing stock, without any policies. The convention is a joke, without 1 true patriot there, it shows their policies.

"If you were better off under Clinton then i guess you were on welfare."
I know of no American better off under Bush than Clinton, particularly not any of my US military colleagues. Under Bush, we've had nothing but reductions in force, base closures, eroding benefits, and of course, failed strategy in in Afghanistan.
President of the United States Barack Obama will change all of this for the better. Sweet!

USAFdude,
It saddens me when a military man feels this way. Have you seen the plan of Obama? He`s going to make our military look like fools, run away from Iraq. Iraq is a tough place, so we have to stay tough and keep the peace.
The Democrats would impoverish America, and weaken our world influence.
I have no doubt the US electorate will vote with sense, and McCain will be our next president.

I thought that the most insightful address of the night was given by a Republican, and a former Congressman from Iowa (1977-2007), Jim Leach. He laid out a half-dozen reasons why he won't support the current Republican spendthrifts and warmongers.
If America becomes more impoverished under the next Democratic leader, it will be because it has gotten a strong push in that direction from the seriously misguided Republican policies. Near the top of the list is cutting taxes in a time of war and doubling the national debt to 10 trillion dollars. Soon the US will spend as much per year paying the interest on that debt as it spends on its military.
People forgot how decades of pro-business Republican misrule drove the US into the Great Depression. It took a Democrat to save the country that time and it looks like it will take one again. As Harry Truman said: "If you want to live like a Republican, you'd better vote like a Democrat."

Yabits,
You sound like you actually watched it, kudos to you!
Apparently Michelle charmed 'em. In the words of usually cranky (former GWB supporter) Andrew Sullivan: “One of the best, most moving, intimate, rousing, humble, and beautiful speeches I’ve heard from a convention platform. Maybe she should be running for president.”
She's been remade into the supportive spouse (which inevitably happens). Old Babs Bush, to prevent her outspokenness from being a liability to her husband, was reduced to ghost writing books for her dog. Hopefully Michelle won't be reduced to that status....

The whole Obama campaign has turned out to be a complete facade in my opinion. He is the one running for president and says what goes in his campaign and to begin it all as he is some kind of perfect candidate makes me not believe anything he says. Watch he will tax the heck out of the middle class is what most Democrats do anyway. The ones that are carrying the weight of the country by like 96%.
As far as Michelle is concerned I cannot listen to her talk. And Oh! nothing has changed from her comment a while back with regards to liking her country (or not. The difference now is that she is following the Obama adivisors that told her after that comment that she cannot say things like that. Her response was " You should have told me this before." She now has changed her tune based on that but not because she actually means it. What does this say about her...
0
SuperLib
Actually Obama's plan reduces the tax burden on the middle class and shifts it more to the wealthiest 20%.

undecidedbout08,
It is not the point that Obama himself refers to himself as being black. The point is that our language forces him to do that. And that is a continuing stain from the notion that you're black even if you have only 1/16 black blood and are as white as Michael Jackson.

Betzee,
Yes, I had C-SPAN on from the opening of the convention right up to and including the final benediction after Michelle Obama's great speech. No commercials and no side commentary from media pundits made for an enjoyable evening.
I've always thought very highly of Michelle Obama. And last night with her address she set a bar that few spouses of presidential nominees could ever hope to match. I admired what I learned about the family she came from -- and her own mom was in the audience to hear her. (Her brother Craig, head basketball coach at Oregon State University, introduced her -- and I like his description of how Barack plays hoops: Won't back down from a challenge, takes the good shot and is the kind of team player who inspires better play out of his teammates.)
I didn't really like the decision to bring out the Obamas' two daughters at the end. I know why they do it, but I don't think it helps the kids any.

If you would like to know what I am on about, a sincere question would work better than cognitively-challenged attempts at dismissiveness.
I, for one, would like to know what you, BoldWarVeteran and possibly others are on about when you refer to "race-obsessed liberals". In my opinion, there is nothing particularly "race-obsessed" about liberals. Race obsession in American transcends parties and it is firmly embedded in our language and culture.

Confederate2008 - it saddens ME when anyone holds the blindly patriotic, blinkered views that you have. Accept it - Bush has treated the military like dirt, especially all of the people who've been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan and then been neglected upon their return to the USA. Just like Vietnam, the other war that you lost. Call that "patriotic"? I don't. No wonder, like everyone else, servicemen and women increasingly want a change
