I don't buy this.

The UK and the US have a "special relationship", along with pretty scary extradition treaties between them.

If the US were so desperate for Assange the UK would have extradited him from the start. Let's face it, the Brits couldn't have bungled the job more than they already have with the embassy fiasco.

Probably in 5 years we'll be hearing the same speeches he's giving today, telling the world the US is 5 minutes away from snatching him up, all while he lives in mansions and pops out to get some publicity every now and then. When he feels he's reached the point where he can't milk the publicity anymore he'll step outside and try to start the media storm all over again. Just my prediction....
