You know most beaches are behind hotels. You can also pay a few durams and go to a private beach to do that. They lucky they didnt pull that in saudi or they would be taking a beating.
Great for Dubai officials for cracking down. I for one am sick and tired of very public displays of affection, nudity, and other nasty business on public beaches, ANYWHERE in the world. Set some examples for the young children and have some dignity and respect for others, for goodness sakes. Is it any wonder the Western world has such a negative image in many parts of the world, particularly the middle eastern one? I'm not saying all of these guilty are 'foreigners' but recently a european lady was arrested for just such a thing. Great for this crackdown.
Na Taka all the hilibutan people live in them luxurious palaces, and compounds. TOO damn scared to walk the streets. But they sure like the tax free income.
They just can't have it both ways in Dubai, they want western technology and know how but is offended by westerners kissing in public. I am so glad that these pent up, dark ages cultures don't run the world.
Umm, Everton, the article clearly states these were cases of people being nude, topless, and engaging in other activities clearly not meant for public eyes. This includes the infamous case of the British man and woman having sex on the beach (the lady was initially only warned but she stupidly got hostile and was then arrested, go figure).
I don't know where you reside but clearly on the public beach I go to they don't tolerate public nudity or having sex on the beach, as it should be. There's a huge difference between 'kissing in public' and being naked and snogging in full view of others, that is just nasty and crass and should be punished.
I agree with rjd jr. These are public beaches that are frequented by families. Also the host country is perfectly within their rights to restrict anything they want to. (However, I am opposed to the utra-conservative behavior in Iran and Saudi Arabia). Even in much of the West/Japan nudists are restricted to certain beaches where they will not offend the sensibilities of the general public. I don't want to be walking on the beach past people having sex.
I very much agree with rjd too. When in Rome do as the Romans do. Want to do your (super unhealthy and potentially harmful) exposure to the elements, and that in view of other people, possibly also adolescent and small children, do it in your private quarters or in regions where this is condoned.
Yes right, Dubai is not the place to do anything. I suspect that the stories of nudity and public affection have been blown out of all proportions. We are talking about a society with very strict draconian rules targeting women while men are allowed to act with impunity in terms of their dress and just general attitude to women. The notion that while in Rome do as the Romans do contradicts the long standing view that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. This is a society that cuts people's harm off as a means of social justice and places an unfair burden on women to be the flag bearer of their pathetic standards.
Dubai is a society that seeks to operate in the 21st century by applying 14th century standards to its domestic policies. I categorically reject their pent up ideas about sex and the place of women in society, and these strict useless laws is one way of continuing to advance these notions.
